Deceased/Not Found Canada - Catherine Todd, 48, Kitchener, 18 March 2013 *J. Parise guilty*

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/murder-vs-manslaughter-1.1155132

Alright, so reviewing this article clarifies (for me, anyway) how Parise pulled this off. Technically, his slaughter of Catherine Todd was manslaughter. All we can hope for now is that he gets life in prison. Given his potential to beat the closest person at hand to death when he flies into a rage (not to mention his drug abuse), I'd hate to see him around children or anyone who sets him off. The girlfriend who aided and abetted him should take note of what a winner she 'helped out.'

Good old CBC... reheating and serving up for the nth time how much time and money was spent on the search through the landfill. Thanks, we know that. We know that really, really well.

Charged with second degree murder, reduced to manslaughter - so was the Crown not confident in getting a conviction for murder without her body? No wonder he was smiling at his last court appearance. :furious::furious:

For a few more lurid details, here is the CBC expanded version:

http://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/parise-sentenced-to-nine-years-for-catherine-todd-manslaughter-1.1692651

With credit for time served, Parise has approximately 7.5 years remaining in his sentence.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/murder-vs-manslaughter-1.1155132

Manslaughter carries no minimum sentence, except when it is committed with a firearm, in which case the minimum sentence is four years in prison. Sentences vary from probation to life in prison.

While I suppose I should be satisfied that Parise did get more than probation, nine years seems so little in exchange for the many years of life stolen from Catherine Todd, doesn't it?

"Pitiful and cowardly"... certainly not pitiful in the sense of full of pity. Let's try on something a little more appropriate, like "despicable." I almost retch at the thought of the women who have fallen and will fall for his contrite routine, already trotted out for Facebook in his little sermon about domestic abuse.

Nine years. Let's see, he won't even be 40 when he is released from prison. Will the justice system have enough sense to impose a few conditions, or anyone remember this enough to get the word out that this man has latently murderous rages?

In related news, and referring back to our discussion earlier in this thread about Take Back the Night and other awareness events providing an opportunity for women from a range of socioeconomic strata to interact, I was appalled by this item:

http://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/neighbours-unhappy-with-proposed-women-s-shelter-in-cambridge-1.1694424

The stereotyping of the 'kind' of women who will supposedly bring all kinds of upset to the neighbourhood was sickening. We have a prime example of the ignorance that leads to a murdered woman's remains being left unrecovered in a landfill. I guess the women potentially needing this shelter would not have children who might benefit from the proximity of schools. Nor would they be from what appeared to be 'decent' homes, because apparently domestic violence is limited to societal bottom-feeders and drug abusers, and is the penalty of a woman's bad choices.

So, any woman who is considering leaving an abusive partner has just had it spelled out for her again, in the local media, that there will indeed be poverty and stigma in store. Better to choose the devil you know, than the devil you only see on TV, in the form of the decent and upright people of this area who will blithely judge you from their assumption that none of this could ever happen to them.

Sorry, my bitter is showing. Time to tuck it back in.

Quite right, Leftcoaster! Pitiful in the sense of 'arousing or deserving contempt, worthless, wretched, pathetic' - definitely not in the sense of 'deserving of pity'!

This is NIMBY-ism at its worst and most harmful - it is the re-victimization of those who need our help the most, those who have already suffered abuse and have no other safe place to go. And sadly, this petition is being supported by parents who are teaching, by example, a disturbing lack of compassion, understanding and tolerance to their children - is it any wonder that some children become bullies?

MOO

Pathetic. Nine years and he will probably be out in four years or less. And no I do not believe he was remorseful and that is JMHO. RIP Catherine, sometimes the justice served in a court of law does not seem fitting. So here's hoping he is served some fitting justice while in prison. MOO

For the first time since he was led into the courtroom, Parise glanced down at his hands. It wasn't much, but Judge Gary Hearn seemed to interpreted the brief action as a genuine sign of remorse.

Parise told the court he beat Todd to death in a drug-induced rage and then dumped her body in a landfill on Erb Street in Waterloo.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kitch...ne-todd-killer-sentenced-to-9-years-1.2543268

Calling his own actions “pitiful and cowardly,” James Parise stood and apologized to Catherine Todd’s family before being sentenced to nine years in prison.

Court documents show that Parise attacked Todd in her Kitchener apartment, killing her, and then attempted to clean away any sign of the incident.
