Canada - Five slain at Brentwood house party, Calgary, 15 April 2014 *Insanity*

The media is calling it the worst mass killing, but it doesn't seem much different than what Josh Lall did in 2008. There were five bodies that day too, with two of them small children.

"Police say the stabbing deaths of five people at a home in northwest Calgary is the worst mass murder in the city’s history. A suspect is in custody after three people were pronounced dead at the scene; two others later died in hospital.

The city has seen similar tragedies in the past.

In 2008, five people died in a murder-suicide. On May 27, 34-year-old Joshua Lall fatally stabbed his wife Alison, his two daughters aged three and five, and a tenant in the home, 30-year-old Amber Bowerman.

He then committed suicide."

Even though de Grood is fit to stand trial, he could still be found not criminally responsible. He's currently housed in a psychiatry centre.

If it is established that de Grood killed the five, the court will then move on to the issue of not criminally responsible (NCR).

If the judge finds that de Grood did not know what he was doing at the time of the killings was wrong, then he will be designated NCR.

"When someone is acting as a result of a mental health problem and is responding to delusions or hallucinations ... we don't assign the same level of criminal responsibility," said forensic psychologist Patrick Baillie.

"We don't find that person guilty but we also don't find them not guilty — we find them not criminally responsible."

NCR: What you need to know as Matthew de Grood's murder trial begins

Under Section 16 (1) of Canada's Criminal Code, a person cannot be found criminally responsible "for an act committed or an omission made while suffering from a mental disorder that rendered the person incapable of appreciating the nature and quality of the act or omission or of knowing it was wrong."

There are at least three reports that will be included as evidence at the trial containing medical opinions regarding de Grood's mental state on April 15, 2014.

I'm going to hazard a guess with the very little info reported so far. Drugs.

Jmo

I saw a movie years ago about how reefers (marijuana) affect some people.
Maybe that's what happened here,

It sounds like he has schizophrenia - completely delusional.
Given that he is fit to stand trial, it's likely that his mental illness is under control with medication.

Matthew de Grood systematically stabbed to death five people at a northwest Calgary house party celebrating the end of the school year, court heard Monday.

But within hours of the killings, after rambling on about his victims being vampires, werewolves and Medusae, de Grood was diagnosed as psychotic and committed under the Mental Health Act.

Reading from a lengthy statement of agreed facts which took more than an hour to put into the court record, Crown prosecutor Neil Wiberg detailed the shocking killings at a Brentwood home.

Wiberg told Justice Eric Macklin that de Grood was able to stab his five victims — Lawrence Hong, Joshua Hunter, Kaiti Perras, Zackariah Rathwell and Jordan Segura — killing them all.

“I stabbed people in the house,” the statement quotes de Grood as telling officers.

“I just want to say that when I stabbed them, I tried to do it mercifully. I aimed for their heart. They put up a struggle which made it hard, but, so you know, it wasn’t sadistic or anything,” he said.

“I didn’t enjoy killing at all. I said sorry, but the son of God was controlling me.”

The trial for a man who admitted to killing five young people at a house party two years ago continued in a Calgary courtroom on Wednesday and two psychiatrists who assessed the accused after the killings took the stand for the defence...

"There is little doubt in my mind he was psychotic at the time," said Dr. Choy when asked if de Grood had a mental disorder in April 2014...

Dr. Zedkova told the court that the accused did not know what he was doing was morally wrong and said he thought the ‘illuminati’ was after him.

The case wrapped up for the day at about 3:00 p.m. and the defence is expected to call a psychologist from Edmonton to the stand on Thursday.

Family of one victim seems to reject the not criminally responsible Canadian law. The victim's families do not have to wonder about the fate of Matthew de Grood. He has schizophrenia and will live a life of hell in his own head.

"A judge in the Matthew de Grood quintuple murder trial has found the young man not criminally responsible for the stabbing deaths.

The finding of NCR will be a recurring nightmare for our families. In this system Matthew de Grood will meet with a Mental Health Review Board every year to determine if he will be granted concessions. There will be no peace for us; our wounds never fully heal because every year our families will have to wonder, what will be the fate of the man who damaged so many lives. Every year we will be forced to relive details of our family’s deaths, the anguish and sorrow. We ask that fellow Canadians become informed about the justice system, the designation “Not Criminally Responsible” and its implications. A possible reprieve for our families is the designation of a High Risk NCR, a new law that among other changes would allow a review board to decide to assess an extremely dangerous offender every three years. The five families would support the prosecution in seeking the designation of High Risk NCR, which would give gravitas to the fact Matthew de Grood killed five people and support the system in ensuring that he is not a threat to the public. Every year that Matthew de Grood is reviewed we hope that our community will value the lives of Josh, Zack, Jordan, Kaiti and Lawrence and do what they can to support the five lives that de Grood ended."

Originally charged with five counts of first-degree murder, de Grood was found to be in a psychotic state at the time of the killings and could not understand that his actions were morally wrong, so he was found not criminally responsible (NCR) in May, following a trial.

At the review hearing in Calgary, de Grood spoke publicly for the first time, committing to continuing his treatment and offering an apology to the families in the courtroom...

De Grood was sent to the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre for treatment where doctors are leaning toward a diagnosis of schizophrenia though, Dr. Sergio Santana said it will take about a year for a full evaluation.

...The review board’s annual hearing is to get an update on de Grood’s progress and determine if he should be granted more freedom.

His psychiatrist told the board de Grood is a model patient who is committed to his treatment.

But Dr. Sergio Santana says the treatment team believes de Grood, who is now 27, will need to stay in the secure hospital for some time.

...It’s possible de Grood could be released back into the community eventually, Santana said. His schizophrenia and post traumatic stress disorder is in full remission but there is an increased risk of violence if he slips back into a psychotic state, Santana said.

...De Grood was granted more privileges following the review in April 2017, including being allowed to go for supervised walks on hospital grounds as well as being allowed trips for medical appointments and treatment.

'Nonsense'

"Hunter's father, Barclay, says the board's decision did not come as a surprise, and that he feels more resigned than outraged.

He says the review board process is "nonsense" and feels no matter what the families say during the annual hearings, they bear no weight on the outcome.

"Me going up and sharing my story of grief and the tragedy of losing my son doesn't, in my opinion, have any impact on what the review board is going to do," he said.

He also feels the approach for treating NCR patients and working toward their eventual reintegration no matter what their past acts — everything from assault to quintuple killings — is problematic.

"I really question the one-size-fits-all approach with this given the extreme nature of what he did," said Hunter."

''EDMONTON - The Alberta Review Board says a mentally ill man who stabbed and killed five young people at a Calgary house party has been making progress but will not be going into a group home in the next year.

Matthew de Grood, who is now 29, was found not criminally responsible for the 2014 killings of Zackariah Rathwell, Jordan Segura, Kaitlin Perras, Josh Hunter and Lawrence Hong, because he was suffering from schizophrenia at the time.''

The board released its decision Wednesday, saying that at this point, increased privileges are out of the question.

“Having considered all the evidence provided at the hearing ... the board in a majority decision finds Mr. de Grood to be a significant threat to the safety of the public,” writes board chair Gerald Hawranik.

The board also rejected recommendations to allow de Grood travel of up to one week within Alberta and unsupervised passes in Edmonton.

“The board in a majority decision does not grant these two privileges. The reports indicate that even if Mr. de Grood does take his medication as prescribed, he may suffer mild to moderate relapses because schizophrenia is a naturally relapsing illness,” said Hawranik.''

''The man who was found not criminally responsible in the stabbing deaths of five people at a house party in Brentwood more than nine years ago is seeking more freedoms.

Matthew de Grood has applied to the Alberta Court of Appeal for an absolute discharge. According to the Government of Canada, that means the court would find him discharged of the offences with no conviction registered.

"Conditional or absolute discharges may only be ordered for less serious offences," the justice department said.

De Grood was arrested on April 15, 2014, in connection with the fatal stabbings of Joshua Hunter, Kaiti Perras, Jordan Segura, Lawrence Hong and Zackariah Rathwell.''

''EDMONTON - A man who stabbed five young people to death at a Calgary house party will not be released from a group home after a ruling Thursday from Alberta’s highest court.

Matthew de Grood, who is now in his early 30s, was found not criminally responsible in 2016 for the killings of Zackariah Rathwell, Jordan Segura, Kaitlin Perras, Josh Hunter and Lawrence Hong. He was suffering from undiagnosed and untreated schizophrenia at the time of the stabbings in 2014.

He asked the Alberta Court of Appeal for an absolute or conditional discharge so he could be closer to his family in Calgary and start to integrate back into society.

His lawyer, Jacqueline Petrie, argued a mental health review board misunderstood the medical evidence on de Grood’s risk assessment in 2022 and that he doesn’t pose a risk. She said he should be allowed an absolute release.''

.............
''The judges said there was “no air of reality” to the claims that the parent’s presence during the virtual hearing could affect de Grood’s or his family’s safety, or affect the fairness of the procedure.

They said de Grood’s complaints about the fairness of his hearing were without merit.''
