''We have a very good, dedicated, professional group of investigators, most of them parents themselves -- as I am,” he said. “And as difficult it is, we’re motivated to find out what happened to this little girl. We want to give her her name back.”

Police are not limiting the investigation to the Dunnville area.

“There’s nothing saying this little girl is from the area,” said Glassford. “We’ve searched the shores of the Grand River all the way up to the Caledonia area. That’s a long stretch of river.”

He said they have also followed up on tips from as far away as the United States
.

"I just really feel bad for the little girl," one resident said. "Whatever happened to her, I wish they would come clean if it happened that way. A little girl like that is too young to leave this world."

''Holland says there are other complications in the identification process. She says there's a challenge that would make it difficult to determine the ethnicity of the young girl.

"If an individual has been dead for a long time, if that outer layer of skin is lost in the process of decomposition, you can't rely on that to determine someone's ancestral origin," she said. "For adults you can look at specific features of the skull but that same kind of assessment isn't always possible for children, particularly young children."

In a statement from the office of the coroner, representative Stephanie Rea said, "Death investigations – especially complex ones – can take many months."

"The coroner needs to be able to answer five questions to complete an investigation: the identify of the deceased, the date of death, location of death, medical cause of death, and manner of death," she said.

The investigation is ongoing and Glassford said he is determined to find the girls identity.

"We're not going to stop until we do get answers," Glassford said. ''

''Police estimate the girl is between one-and-a-half and two years old.

She remains with Toronto’s Office of the Chief Coroner, where they are working to determine her identity as well as how she ended up in the river, through various testing including DNA and toxicology.''

The Grand River flows through various cities, including Cambridge, Waterloo, Kitchener, and Brantford, which have populations over 100,000 each. The greater Toronto area starts a few miles away.

"Idsinga would not elaborate on the tip police received, which was one of dozens they got over the course of the investigation. He did say that the piece of information wasn't very specific, but it pointed them to a possible lead."
Kudos to everyone who gave tips!

Progress, but no answers, in Dunnville ‘Baby Doe’ investigation

There has been no progress either on narrowing down her age, which is estimated as 10.5 months to 2.5 years.

Glassford, who handles major cases for the OPP’s criminal investigation branch, was brought in after fishermen found Baby Doe’s remains at the northeast edge of Dunnville’s main bog island, just east of the dam, in May of last year.

“We’ve checked missing person files all over North America,” Glassford said. “We’ve been conversing with different police agencies in Canada and the United States.”

“The DNA can tell us a lot. Genealogy is a big thing,” he said, explaining that narrowing down what part of the world Baby Doe’s family comes from could help police create a visual image of the child.''

'And while investigators cannot be certain where the child’s body entered the river, Glassford expects it was “a short distance” from the bog island.'

Thank you for the update. I’m happy they’ve made progress in identifying her.

“We understand from the Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) results that the child's heritage is half Chinese or neighbouring countries along the southern Chinese border, and is of North African heritage as well,” police said in their news release on Monday.”

Half Chinese, half North African is an uncommon genetic profile. I hope it rings a bell somewhere.
