Ottawa cops hunt serial 'predator'

By Doug Hempstead, QMI Agency

"OTTAWA - The city's top crime investigator confirms he is hunting for a predator.

Six street-level sex workers have been murdered in Ottawa in the past 21 years.

Acting deputy chief of major crimes, Tyrus Cameron, won't say how many of the crimes he believes were committed by the same person.

But there definitely is a pattern, even though the homicides have happened over such a long space of time.

Cameron fears tipping his hand and letting the suspect see his cards. So that's just not going to happen.

"The next update I give will hopefully be when I tell you we've got someone," he said.

They don't have a suspect. All of the murders which have been identified by investigators as part of the pattern have previously been reported."

OPP investigating possible link in two sex-trade workers’ deaths

The Ontario Provincial Police is probing a possible link between the murder of sex-trade worker Leanne Freeman and the suspicious death of former escort Kera Freeland, whose body was dumped at a remote Caledon site in March.

The cases have disturbing similarities, from the women’s lifestyle to their last names and their dimples and chestnut hair, although years of bad living had hardened both their features.

“My detectives are contacting the Toronto detectives today,” said OPP Det. Insp. Chris Gilpin, who is managing the file on Freeland, which is still classed as a suspicious death.

Freeland, 20, disappeared in January and her body was found in a ditch on March 17. Police have never released the cause of death or whether she was fully clothed.

On Tuesday, Freeman, 23, was shot in the head and left to die on Unwin Ave., a remote area of the Toronto Port Lands. She was clothed.

Both women were from Western Canada — Freeman was from Winnipeg and Freeland grew up in Calgary.

Varaschin murder, Loder attack, human remains discovered
Author of serial killer book discusses these and more

Having spent three years researching and writing about Canadian murderers, author Lee Mellor has more insight than most people into the world of violence.
While Dufferin and area has several unsolved violent crimes on its books in the past couple years, Mellor is convinced it’s merely a string of isolated events.

“Serial killers are so rare, it’s not a conclusion we should lead to,” he said, referring to 2010 murder of Orangeville’s Sonia Varaschin, the near-fatal attack on Mono resident Shelley Loder that same year, as well as several discoveries of human remains — Van Sanh Tieu inside a burned down Alton building and Kera Freeland in a Caledon ditch, both last March, as well as skeletal remains found near Caledon Village just a couple weeks ago.

Turning specifically to Varaschin’s murder, the Brighton-area author feels her killer’s original intent may not have been murder. Rather, he suspects the perpetrator had a “disorganized mindset” and “lost control” of the situation

"Even closer to home, the ditch on Heart Lake Road where last spring a pedestrian spotted the body of 20-year-old escort Kera Freeland, is just a five-minute walk from Ms. Leckie’s front door.

The cases of Ms. Freeland and Ms. Varaschin are the only two in which no arrests have been made. Ms. Leckie says that only increases her aversion to the site."
