Colorado deputy killed, 4 others shot in 'ambush-style' attack outside Denver

Spurlock identified the deceased officer as 29-year-old Zackari Parrish, who had been a Douglas County deputy for seven months.

“I can’t tell you how difficult it is for a leader to sit down with a spouse of an officer who was killed in the line of duty,” Spurlock said. “They had many hopes and dreams. He was doing his job and he was doing his job well.”

Parrish is survived by his wife and two children and previously worked for two years at the Castle Rock Police Department.

Zackari Parrish, 29, was identified as the deputy killed in the shooting. Parrish joined the force seven months ago. He is survived by his wife and two children. Spurlock said he sat with Parrish's wife and "could see in her eyes that her life was over."

I'll add one last thought. I sat in on DCSO SAR meetings when I was thinking of joining SAR, before I had to attend to family matters. DCSO knows their County and understands the diversity of the community and the types of calls they get. They're a well-funded bunch and they capitalize on training for what can happen in their territory. Imho.

This shooting is so disturbing and sad to me. This young husband and father did not have to die. I'm so thankful that the other officers and civilians are not dead. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones.

Thank you so much. Sometimes I have to step away when such hurtful and unfair things are said. What you have posted also bothers me but it also bothers me when those who have never walked a day in any LEs shoes chide them for being nervous (human beings) when the officers think they may be facing someone who is going to kill them dead. I suppose those who believe cops stop being human beings, and become robots instead ....would have nerves of steel, and wouldn't flinch when they came face to face of the worst in society with most of them heavily armed/confrontational wanting to inflict great bodily harm or death on police officers.

The double standards are mind boggling. Yet it is the officers who come face to face with the worst in our society millions of times a year. They are assaulted almost 60K a year, but that doesn't seem to matter either. Instead the ones who seem to resent cops totally conveniently dismiss those assaults which doesn't happen to any other profession on our soil, and go strictly by how many were murdered. We know many of our officers have sustained life altering injuries done by criminals where their quality of life is no longer even close to what it use to be.

I truly do not understand any of it and never have. Why all officers are painted with the same wide brush has never made one bit of sense to me when most all officers are fine upstanding people who tremendously help their communities and do so with little pay.

I am so glad in the area where I live.... police officers are given the respect they deserve.

Thank you so much for your post. It is so sad when police officers are totally dismissed as fellow human beings with families and loved ones. These people sign up to put their lives into danger just to keep the rest of us safe. They are ridiculed, scorned, spat upon, urine thrown into their faces, bottles bounced off of their heads but they still stand strong, ready to protect, with their lives, the very same people who wish them harm.
My heart and thanks go out to them and I cry for their families loss.

This young man gave his life to protect us and he deserves the respect and honor he was shown. PERIOD.

Usually not. If you are on duty and not currently answering a call, you can typically join the procession. However, in situations like this, officers often come out on their own to support their fellow officer. If you choose to do that, you do not check-in as "on-duty" for pay purposes. I don't know of a single time in my experience where an off-duty officer checked in for pay when responding to check on fellow officers at the hospital or to attend a funeral.

Most agencies have honor guards, and they would be paid for showing up for an escort as the honor guard. For those not being paid, it is a show of concern and respect for the wounded or killed officers and their families. Same for funerals. I attended many funerals over my career, in uniform, that I was not paid my salary for attending, fortunately only a very few for line-of-duty deaths. It's just part of what you do as a member of that profession.

Some are. Those who are off-duty aren’t. Why does it matter? I take it from your post that you object that on duty officers be allowed to drive in a funeral processions. I’ll tell you what. Name another profession where the employees run towards the danger instead of cowering behind the nearest solid object.

Gunman in deadly Colorado deputy shooting identified as Iraq War vet with grudge against sheriff

Riehl, who was killed, was an Army veteran who served briefly in Iraq, Fox 31 Denver reported.

He is seen wearing an Iraq combat veteran hat in a Dec. 13 YouTube video in which he called Spurlock a “clown” and a deputy a pimp.

“You know who’s going flub big time next election, Spurlock,” Riehl said in the video called “Fire Sheriff Spurlock.”

He said he was running against Spurlock as a libertarian.

A video posted on Nov. 28 showed a traffic stop by a police officer in the city of Lone Tree — apparently taken inside the officer's car — that Riehl said was done illegally. He claimed the officer clocked the wrong driver, identifying the officer by name in the video and calling him "dirty."

"S---bag, dirtbag, liar," he says as the officer questioned the driver. "He's the boss, huh? He's the Nazi in charge with the stripes on his shoulder and the fake badge."

This has become a tragedy in every possible way.
A war veteran, obviously with PTSD, opens fire on Sheriff's deputies, killing one and wounding multiple others.
It is such a shame that war veterans are not getting the help they need - resulting in this tragedy.
