The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.
There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.
New virus in China ‘will have infected hundreds'
Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.
Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.
But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

PLEASE NOTE:

Tricia set up the Covid forum for people who are genuinely concerned about Covid-19. It is not for anyone who is here with a view to minimizing its existence or downplaying the severity of it. Please know that MSM, scientists, politicians, government agencies worldwide are not involved in the biggest conspiracy in the history of man to convey the pandemic as more serious than it is.

If you aren't concerned about Covid-19, this Covid forum is not for you. There are lots of other Websleuths threads you can participate in that need your help.

Members whose posts seem designed to downplay the seriousness of the virus or the pandemic may experience a loss of posting privileges, whether a Thread Reply Ban or Time Out of minimum 1 week up to 3 months from the Websleuths forum.

This is all so exhausting. I'm headed for a hot bubble bath and my ever so comfy bed and the escape of sleep. I hope all that are ill feel better very soon. We're ending the year in a bad place and starting the new one in the same. Whatever your belief system, pray/wish/meditate/hope for wisdom and an end to this God awful pandemic around the world.

Currently cuddled up by the fire with a glass of Chardonnay and my amazing golden retriever. He’s so calming :). Enjoy your bath!

I'm not at all downplaying autoimmune diseases. My sil has lupus and has literally not figuratively almost died from something as simple as the flu more than once. And not one of the specialists she sees would suggest it was safer to not get vaccinated in case a vaccine could induce a transient autoimmune flare.

But I am over all highly suspicious of all the people who claim their doctors suggest not to get one. I do not know one serious reputable doctor treating actual autoimmune disease say this to anyone. I do however know medical doctors I could go to though and get them to say I shouldn't get it. And all my alternative medicine friends know the same and have actively sought doctors out just for this.

I'm sorry if I'm wrong about your mil's situation. But having seen similar situations repeatedly of people who are only seeing "alternative" practitioners who tell them this, always makes me suspicious. Severe depression sucks. But a severe case of covid isn't going to help someone with an autoimmune disease either. It sure won't help with severe depression either.

And unfortunately covid has serious side effects on the brain. I'm very sorry for your mil and all the millions out there having to risk covid. This is a perfect example though of why other people SHOULD be making better and safer choices for everyone involved like regularly masking indoors. There is no real risk free scenario. The vaccines might be risky for some. But we've got covid which is even riskier.

Choosing to not protect others is what bothers me. And that's what most people are choosing to do. When they choose to go everywhere unmasked they make the entire world riskier and unsafe for those who can't be vaccinated and those who are still vulnerable while vaccinated. I'm very bothered by that level of thoughtlessness.

The Gov of ON has published a doc about vaccinations in special populations, including those with autoimmune disorders. There is no recommendation that such people avoid vaccinations, but there is a recommendation to discuss the timing of receiving the vaccination while on medications.

Sometimes family doctors might suggest that the individual not be vaccinated, but this is a mistake. The patient should be referred to a specialist in immunology who can guide them through their vaccinations.

In ON, having an autoimmune disorder is not an exemption from being vaccinated. There are very few actual contraindications to available COVID-19 vaccines that would qualify as medical exemptions and most individuals can safely receive Covid vaccines.

Vaccination Requirement: Indoor Public Activities (Key to NYC)

People 5 and older are required to show proof they have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine for:

  • Indoor dining
    • Includes restaurants, catering halls, hotel banquet rooms, bars, nightclubs, cafeterias, coffee shops, fast food restaurants, grocery stores with indoor dining and other indoor dining spaces
  • Indoor fitness
    • Includes gyms, fitness centers, fitness classes, pools, dance studios and other indoor fitness studios, such as yoga or Pilates
  • Indoor entertainment and certain meeting spaces
    • Includes movie theaters, music and concert venues, museums, aquariums and zoos, professional sports arenas, indoor stadiums, convention centers, exhibition halls, hotel meeting and event spaces, performing arts theaters, bowling alleys, arcades, pool and billiard halls, recreational game centers, adult entertainment and indoor play areas
People 18 and older are also required to show identification along with their proof of vaccination. These requirements — called the Key to NYC — also means employees working at these locations must be vaccinated.

Looks like people can go to crowded grocery stores and other shopping stores without showing proof of vaccination in New York City.

Not until next school year
From the link:

Based on current information, the requirement is expected to apply to grades 7-12 starting on July 1, 2022. However, local health jurisdictions and local education agencies are encouraged to implement requirements ahead of a statewide requirement based on their local circumstances.

It doesn’t apply to my kids since we do not live in CA. My point being, in an earlier post, was that someone had mentioned that they can’t believe Covid vaccines and masks aren’t mandated. And I said, this is the norm and that I didn’t know of any schools mandating the Covid vaccine yet. My comment still stands.

This thread often reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode where one family has a bomb shelter in their basement. I know many of you have had conflicts with friends and family over Covid. Do you think that when (if) this ends, those relationships will be restored, or will there be lingering animosity? Will you be able to go back to normal with people who flaunted every protocol from the beginning?
I’ll have understanding for those who have bent a few rules....but I don’t know how I will every respect one of our adult children who first insisted Covid was a hoax, then refused to wear a mask,,,and still does, and who then refused to get vaccinated or to allow his kids ( our grandchildren ) to vaccinate..and who ghosts everyone who does these things. I/ we are so disgusted with him and dont understand what is wrong with him. ...or his conspiracy theories, which are bizarre. Meanwhile we have had a relative with Covid,,,have another grandchild working in hospital directly with Covid patients and so on...but nothing changes this one selfish sons attitude. I hope someday we can forgive, but I wonder.

<modsnip> Obviously Covid is real. People have died. That I don’t understand.

My sister works for the State of California and is not vaccinated. She gets tested each week instead.

SACRAMENTO – Today, the State of California is taking decisive action to combat the spread of COVID-19 and protect vulnerable communities – implementing a first-in-the-nation standard to require all state workers and workers in health care and high-risk congregate settings to either show proof of full vaccination or be tested at least once per week, and encourage all local government and other employers to adopt a similar protocol.

I live in Maryland and besides Baltimore City nobody wears masks here. If people do wear masks they are certainly in the minority. The governor says he has no plans for a mask mandate or a shut down ever again

I had to look at Maryland's position, as things sound quite loose there .... according to the cumulative info that has been posted.
The medical professionals sound concerned. imo

Marcy Austin, the interim health officer at the Harford County Health Department ..... “Vaccination, including a booster for those who are eligible, masking, hand washing and testing are all simple steps everyone can employ now, that can have a profound impact on the trajectory of COVID-19 in the weeks and months to come.”

Oh yes. It’s running quite rampant here lately. My best friend is an ER doctor at our local
Hospital (he runs the hospital ER department) as well as my own sister who works tirelessly at another local hospital. It wasn’t nearly as bad as it has been recently.

Having different boundaries/views on this hasn't actually caused conflicts for me. I am very pro-vax with a few stray family members who are anti-vax. Our relationships are exactly the same as before the pandemic except that I mostly only talk with them outside. Other than a rabidly anti-vax co-worker who seeks out conflict with others, my relationships have not suffered. And even with her, I'm just sort of patiently waiting for her to come to her senses. Of course, some of these people may die before that happens.

we are an independent living facility, not assisted living. She is her own boss, doesn't work for an agency and works for cash under the table. She is more like a person that runs errands, puts people on the commode, gets their meals for them, feeds their pets, picks up their room, gives them thier prescribed meds, showers, cleans them up etc etc she's not a licensed home health aide but she does do home health Care. And no she does not wear a mask and no one here in our facility says a word to her as our director says masks are optional. And yes it bothers me but I actually like her very much as a person. Not many will do what she does. She is triple vaxxed, but no one wears masks here! Hence why I'm the local weirdo.
Whoa. She handles personal care, meds, etc and is paid under the table?

That's a little (or a lot) disconcerting as there are no licensing or oversight regulations in place. But I know some elders just don't have the $$ or health insurance to acquire proper, licensed home healthcare workers, so they have to go with whatever rando they can afford, licensed or not. The system is just sad. Ignoring the needs of the elderly is a sad reflection of our priorities as a society. jmo

US pauses distribution of Regeneron, Lilly antibodies over omicron concerns

  • The U.S. government has paused distribution of COVID-19 antibody drugs from Eli Lilly and Regeneron, citing their apparent lack of potency against the fast-spreading omicron variant.
  • Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates the omicron variant now accounts for about three-quarters of U.S. COVID-19 cases, which have spiked dramatically. Lab tests have shown it is "unlikely" that Regeneron's drug or Lilly's two antibody treatments retain activity against the variant, according to a letter from the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response.
  • The ASPR's decision will remain in place pending new data from the CDC. In the meantime, shipments of Vir Biotechnology and GlaxoSmithKline's antibody drug, sotrovimab, have resumed. Vir's drug is the only antibody currently authorized as a treatment that is expected to neutralize omicron, but supplies are limited.

MOO but she is dead wrong for what she's doing. The people that she's putting on the commode etc. are defenseless to the ramifications of her poor decisions. Conditions for the elderly/chronically ill are often subjected to subpar care and disregard if they don't have access to tons of financial resources. It borders on criminal IMO.
I'm glad you are taking good care of yourself by eating meals in your room and taking all of the grounded in science steps to stay well. It must be difficult for you to see such irresponsible behavior. Stay well.

I agree. I'm also still reeling from the "cash under the table" comment. She's got a whole thing going there.
