Tuesday morning, almost a year after that encounter, Case and several other Peace River searchers and their dogs joined in a renewed search for Diana, fanning out around that same San Carlos Park community.

Looking around the Sheltering Pines trailer park just off U.S. 41, dogs and handlers walked through weedy, brushy, mosquito-infested woods, along sunlit streets, backyards, front yards, wood piles, trash piles and just about everywhere.

Reverand Sarah Witten-Grigsby, public information officer and chaplin for Peace River K9 Search and Rescue, said the dogs and handlers were part of 12 such teams that were searching for evidence of Diana across the state.

Other crews are continuing to search along the travel route officials believe suspect Jorge Guerrero-Torres took.

I was thinking about Diana today and searched to see if there were any updates on her. I found two new articles that have not been posted yet!

Documents refer to ‘murder’ of Diana Alvarez

Newly released documents from the state attorney’s office make reference to the “murder” of Diana Alvarez.

The disappearance of the San Carlos Park girl is still being treated by authorities as a missing person’s case, but the findings represent the first time the term “murder” has been formally used in relation to the girl, who was 9 when she vanished on May 29, 2016.

“This is a classic case where a child was abducted and possibly the worst may have happened to her,” said Walt Zalisko, a private investigator hired by Diana’s family.

The documents detail an interview the Lee County Sheriff’s Office conducted with Juan Laverde, an inmate who spent time in jail with 29-year-old Jorge Guerrero of Mexico, the only suspect in the child’s disappearance.

Laverde told sheriff’s investigators Guerrero asked him how much time he’d face for “the murder charge.” Guerrero told Laverde he thought he’d be charged for rape, kidnapping and murder, Laverde said.

Alvarez, who vanished when she was just 9 years old, has been missing since May 2016.

The remains of a Florida girl who went missing in 2016 were found last week, authorities said, and her accused killer could face the death penalty.

Diana Alvarez was 9 years old when she vanished in the middle of the night from her home in San Carlos Park, about 18 miles south of Fort Myers on the state's Gulf Coast. The search for her ended Thursday when her body was found in Yeehaw Junction, about 140 miles away, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Following her disappearance in May 2016, the sheriff's office and assisting agencies twice searched areas of Yeehaw Junction in Osceola County after the phone of Jorge Guerrero, a friend of the family, pinged there around the time of Alvarez's disappearance.
