On Feb. 20, Simpson’s boyfriend found her hanging in the garage and went to a neighbor’s house to ask them to call 911. When asked why Shinn didn’t call 911 himself, the neighbor said he told her he “did not have a phone,” court documents state.

Shinn told police he was in the bedroom watching YouTube videos and went to check on his girlfriend because he hadn’t heard from her in a while.

When paramedics arrived, they found the victim with a black wire wrapped around her neck, connected to a beam in the garage. She was determined to have several injuries, including cuts on her face, hand and wrist, broken ribs, a neck fracture and a brain hemorrhage.

According to police, Shinn said she was suicidal in the days leading up to her death. However, investigators believe the injuries “were not consistent with the allegation that the victim hung herself.”

According to the warrant, investigators were looking for the diary, titled “My Feelings,” because a neighbor told the victim to document the alleged domestic abuse.

Police seized the following items on Feb. 22, according to the search warrant:
  • Two spools of black electrical wire
  • Loose black electrical wire
  • Three pliers, wire cutters
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Snips
  • Cameras
  • Red stain gauze
  • Pillow case
  • Fitted sheet
  • Doorbell camera

According to an affidavit for a search warrant, first responders found 59-year-old Katrin Simpson hanging by a black wire attached to a wooden beam in the garage of the St. Pete home she shared with her boyfriend, 48-year-old Gregory Shinn, on Feb. 20. Court documents say Shinn had a neighbor call 911 because he didn’t have a phone. Paramedics responded around 11:40 p.m. to the home on Whiting Drive Southeast.

Shinn told officers he last saw Simpson between 10 - 10:30 p.m., and said he was in his room watching YouTube videos. He told detectives he felt like he should check on her because he hadn’t heard from her in a while, went to the garage and found her hanging from the beam, court documents say.

Shinn told officers Simpson had said she wanted to kill herself and had regular thoughts about it, but hadn’t said anything that day.

He also told them she had been journaling in a diary titled "my feelings."

After further investigating, detectives determined there was a history of domestic violence and there were inconsistencies with Shinn's statements. Also, Simpson had injuries inconsistent with suicide by hanging, according to police.

Shinn is charged with first-degree murder.
