On Christmas Eve 1968, Demetra and Nick Jeatran were found beaten in their home near Drew Street in Clearwater during what police said is an apparent burglary.

Demetra Jeatran, 74, died that day in the couple's house. Nick, 82, died three days later at Morton Plant Hospital. Their deaths are the city's oldest unsolved homicides...

Investigators followed hundreds of leads. They lifted fingerprints and collected a large amount of blood from the crime scene. They key point, though, is that police didn’t have a single witness..

After 50 years, Clearwater police hope to crack city's oldest cold case

Committed to finding the killers, detectives have never let the case go cold.

"Recently I went down to property and evidence and I cut up the rug that was under them to find more fibers,” Ruhlin said. "The phone was moved, I had the back of that cutout, we really went in there to get DNA evidence."

He admits time is not on their side, but investigators plan to submit some of this new evidence for analysis and hopefully get a break in the case.

Closure loved ones, police and neighbors would love to have.

"I would like to see them get the murderer who did it, and why did they do it," Poutre said.

"Hopefully somebody will see it that maybe knows something, has been afraid to talk, realizes it's been 50-years,” said Ruhlin. “Maybe somebody will come forward and tell us what happened."

Boy this sounds like a good case for genetic genealogy if they can get enough DNA in good condition.

A half a century later, Clearwater police still on the hunt on behalf of the Jeatrans

“We still have the physical evidence,” Sgt. Mike Hasty said of what was collected from that crime scene on Jackson Road on Dec. 24, 1968. “It’s just been processed again, a few months ago.”

“Anytime we learn of any new technology, right away the Jeatran evidence goes to the front of the line,” he said. “We’re always on the lookout.”
