FL – “Pillowcase Rapist” – 6 victims (1984-1985, Pompano Beach, Broward County) - *Robert Eugene Koehler aka Robert Eugene Koeholer (25 @ time of first crime/62/now 63) charged (6/7/22) with 6 counts of sexual assault in Broward County.
In June 1984, a woman living in an apartment in Pompano Beach endured a sudden, cruel & violent attack in the sanctity of her home. She was brutally raped at knife point by a man who broke into her apartment. On at least eight occasions in 1984 & 1985, detectives believe Koehler snuck into homes in Broward County late at night or in the wee hours of the morning through unlocked doors & attacked his victims while they slept or prepared for bed. He sometimes covered the heads of his victims or his own head, sometimes with pillowcases & threatened to kill them or their family members before raping & robbing them. Koehler will be brought to Broward County to face the charges against him, once the cases against him in Miami-Dade are adjudicated.

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – The trial continued Friday for Robert Koehler, known as the “Pillowcase Rapist,” in Miami-Dade County.

As the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s office rested its case on Friday afternoon, Koehler’s lawyers asked to have the case thrown out. Judge Daryl Trawick said “no” to the request. “The motion for judgment of acquittal is denied,” he told the court.

The jury heard how Koehler’s DNA was obtained and was linked to the crimes.

Laura Adams, the assistant state attorney in the Miami-Dade County’s State Attorney’s office, asked Miami-Dade Police Department Forensic Investigator Jamie Bethel about the analysis of the DNA.

Also in Friday’s proceedings, the jury heard from investigators from Miami-Dade Police who, in 202, followed Koehler to a Walmart to find something he touched in hopes of using it to test his DNA.

“We saw that the defendant had wiped the shopping cart with wipes, the little canister of wipes they have there, cleaned the shopping bag and he had thrown it into the little trash area there,” Cecile Alvarez, a former Miami-Dade Police Department Sergeant said while on the stand.

The state rested its case on Friday around 2 p.m. The jury was sent home. On Monday, the defense will get their turn to call witnesses. Koehler is expected to take the stand in his own defense.

Koehler said he was kidnapped, drugged and tortured by people who he claims were crooked police officers.

He said the kidnappers planted a tracking device in his arm, killed a man and woman in front of him, and threatened him with being framed for the murder of his family.

Koehler said he woke up naked and strapped to a chair with a hood over his head. He said the hood was lifted and a 4 to 6-year-old girl was in front of him, duct-taped to a chair and holding a doll.

Koehler claimed police told him they needed someone to be a serial rapist so they could justify obtaining more funds for police budgets. He said they used some type of device to extract bodily fluid out of him — evidence that could be planted crime scenes.

Judge Daryl Trawick had repeatedly warned the defense that its queries about other rapes could open the door to the state bringing in further evidence tying Koehler to the other crimes.

And that’s exactly what the state requested to do in its rebuttal case after the defense rested Wednesday. [I believe they mean on Tuesday]


"Counsel, this is why I kept asking are you sure you want to go down this road?” Trawick told assistant public defender Damaris Del Valle.

“Judge, I stand by I have not opened the door. I have walked very carefully upon what you described as thin ice and it has not cracked and it has not broken,” Del Valle replied.

The judge disagreed, ruling for the state – which wanted to show jurors how Koehler’s DNA was also found at a 1985 rape scene Del Valle had questioned a retired detective sergeant about.


When the defense said it would then need a long recess – perhaps days – to question witnesses and investigate evidence in the 1985 case, Trawick lamented that he had told jurors the case would end by Wednesday at the latest and he did not want an undue delay.

Both sides agreed, the defense saying it was not contesting Koehler’s DNA was connected to the rapes – only how it got there.

1/25/23 Wednesday, Trial Day 5: Koehler was found guilty on all three counts of kidnapping, burglary & sexual battery, Wednesday. Sentencing hearing for Koehler is set for 3/17/23.
FL – “Pillowcase Rapist” – 6 victims (1984-1985, Pompano Beach, Broward County) - *Robert Eugene Koehler aka Robert Eugene Koeholer (25 @ time of first crime/62/now 63) charged (6/7/22) with 6 counts of sexual assault in Broward County.
In June 1984, a woman living in an apartment in Pompano Beach endured a sudden, cruel & violent attack in the sanctity of her home. She was brutally raped at knife point by a man who broke into her apartment. On at least eight occasions in 1984 & 1985, detectives believe Koehler snuck into homes in Broward County late at night or in the wee hours of the morning through unlocked doors & attacked his victims while they slept or prepared for bed. He sometimes covered the heads of his victims or his own head, sometimes with pillowcases & threatened to kill them or their family members before raping & robbing them. Koehler will be brought to Broward County to face the charges against him, once the cases against him in Miami-Dade are adjudicated.

A suspected serial rapist who police say terrorized South Florida for years in the early 1980s was sentenced to 17 years in prison in connection with one case in Miami-Dade.

Robert Koehler, now 63, was sentenced by Judge Daryl Trawick during a hearing Thursday. The 17-year sentence was the maximum Trawick could impose under the state's guidelines.

Koehler will get credit for time served.

But in court Thursday, it was learned Koehler couldn't be sentenced for the sexual battery charge, since it was barred by the statute of limitations.

More than two years after his arrest in the Miami-Dade case, the Broward Sheriff's Office announced Koehler would be charged in at least six sexual assault cases in the county.
