Manhunt launched in France after prison guards killed in ambush

France has launched a major manhunt after at least two prison guards were shot dead and three others were seriously injured in an ambush, Reuters reported.

Heavily armed men ambushed a prison van to free an inmate, French police said, triggering the major manhunt.

This is the terrifying moment masked gunmen ambushed a prison van at a French tollbooth before shooting dead two guards, freeing a suspected narco boss dubbed 'The Fly' and fleeing on foot.

The prison van was attacked after 11am on the A154 motorway near the Incarville tollbooth, located in the town of Val-de-Reuil, Normandy, northern France.

At least three French guards were killed, and two others were left wounded, following the attack which saw the assailants and detainee, Mohammed Amra, 30, managing to escape the scene.

Footage, filmed by a terrified passenger on a bus, shows gunmen aiming their weapons at the prison van as the raid unfolded.

The inmate, reportedly nicknamed 'La Mouche' (The Fly), was being transported between the towns of Rouen and Evreux in Normandy before the bloodbath unfolded.

Amra's latest conviction was for burglary, and he also has a past conviction for attempted murder.

The reported identity of the escaped prisoner has now also been reported by the Guardian on their live page, as released by French media:

Escaped prisoner named as Mohamed Amra by French media

The escaped prisoner has been named by French media as Mohamed Amra, 30, known as “La Mouche” (The Fly).

Public prosecutor Laure Beccuau said Amra was under high surveillance and had recently been sentenced for burglary, and that he was under investigation for a kidnapping and homicide case in Marseille, the AP reported.

From mail article posted above:

police source told Le Parisien that he was 'the head of a narcotics network' in France, and accordingly considered hugely dangerous.

The French publication also reported that Mohammed had attempted to escape his cell just two days before Tuesday's escape.

He had allegedly been placed in solitary confinement an his surveillance level was raised to 'Escort 3'.

Amra, who had a total of 13 convictions to his name, was under ‘special surveillance’, but not considered radicalised or a terrorist suspect, said Éric Dupond-Moretti, France’s justice minister.

At the time of the attack, Amra was on his way from Évreux prison to court for a commital hearing that would have been made public. This would have made the route relatively easy to work out.

Prosecutors working for the National Jurisdiction for the Fight against Organised Crime (JUNALCO) have opened an enquiry into ‘murder and attempted murder by an organised gang’ – offences punishable with a life sentence.

They are also investigating ‘escape in an organised gang’, ‘acquisition and possession of weapons of war’ and ‘criminal association with a view to the commission of a crime,’ said Moretti.

Yes sorry @Skigh , that wasn't me being passive aggressive - this was also in the BBC live page earlier from 'an inside source', but I was at work and holding back on the ID until confirmed by French media! I got home and saw it had also been verified by Reuters so popped it above. Didn't mean to turn a blind eye to your post.

Lots of informative stuff in this Sky report now that there's more available. This is the most interesting IMO:

A prison source told Le Parisien that Amra had tried to saw the bars off his cell two days before the ambush.

He had reportedly been placed in solitary confinement and his surveillance level raised after the escape attempt - making more guards necessary during transportation.

Two prison officers were killed, with one leaving behind a five months pregnant wife, with three more guards seriously injured.
[snip]
Footage from the scene near the commune of Incarville appeared to show a hooded attacker in all black firing an assault rifle at the prisoner convoy. One of the attackers was injured in retaliatory fire, a prison officer union boss said.
and from an earlier posting in the live feed...

Wife of killed prison officer is five months pregnant

One of the killed officers had a wife and two children, while the other leaves behind a wife who is five months pregnant, France’s justice minister Eric Dupond-Moretti has said.

The perpetrators of the ambush during a transfer from a courthouse to a prison in Rouen “didn’t hesitate to shoot the prison officers using heavy weapons”, he said.

WOW, They spent a lot of time(even though it was fast) at the prisoners bus. I wonder if any of the prisoners were harmed or got away.
And the people just driving by like nothing was amiss. Just crazy all around.

that big yellow truck could've swerved into the black car and saved the day ... maybe not a realistic scenario but if only ...

I have to wonder if the people (innocent bystanders) who saw this unfold may have assumed the men in black with helmets and guns were LE? And I don't think most people would want to be in the middle of random gunfire so I would think most people would keep moving to get out of the way?

Plus, sometimes when things happen in real time, you react one way but realize the danger or reality of the situation only later?

MOO.

I am wondering about the toll plaza where the LE/prisoner vehicles were effectively trapped/stopped. How did the assailaints get to have the black vehicle in place to hit the LE vehicle head on? How long were they in place/waiting there? I would like to see a better view/layout of that area.

"Interpol on Wednesday said it issued an international arrest warrant, a ‘Red Notice’, for fugitive Mohamed Amra, 30, at the request of French authorities."

and

"A waiting black Peugeot vehicle pulled out and rammed into the front of the van, bringing it to a sudden stop, said Paris state prosecutor Laure Beccuau.

Several men wearing balaclavas and equipped with military-grade weapons stepped out of the car and began firing at the van. The assailants were joined by a second crew who stepped out of a nearby Audi. The whole operation took place in around two minutes, officials said."
