Stain A...found blood with the complete profile of GZ..

Stain B...positive for blood and matched TM

Stain C...negative for blood

Stain D...positive blood, was able to obtain mixture of DNA, could not determine which was a major or minor contributor..both GZ and TM were contributors to that mixture..

Stain E...positive for blood and matched TM...small stain on R hand side toward bottom

Also tested R sleeve, negative for blood, DNA matched TM

L sleeve was negative for blood, DNA was a mixture, the foreign sample was not able to ID but not able to exclude GZ

1:46 PM Court is in session, please be seated. I think the Jury has just gotten back from their lunch. Is there anything else the court can take up while we wait for them?

West wonders if Crump can be available tomorrow for deposition? (4th of July)

West wants Court to recess Friday to take Crump's deposition. Also they want to take depos of a couple of other witnesses. i.e. Mr. Benton(?) or Mr. Blackwell (?).

The Judge: The State has said they intend to rest today. The Jury is sequestered. To take Friday off is just not reasonable. Crump has been available since forever. But, West says, wah, wah, wah.

If state rests today, the Defense has tomorrow to use to get ready. Friday is first business day after the holiday. West, "but we were still litigating evidentiary issues after the trial started. "

The Judge: Now I have a jury sequestered and they are going to be off, 4 days? I am not doing that.

State Next Witness:

Anthony Gorgone Crime Lab Analyst with FDLE
He is a DNA expert and statistics specialist and Is up to date with DNA information. Has previously testified 28 times in Florida courts, prior to today.

Describes what DNA is: It is what makes our genetic code unique. It is in every cell of our body.

STR Process - his lab uses this method. His lab is accredited. Talks about methods and controls used while analyzing evidence. And, the outfits he wears while analyzing. Twice a year proficiency tests.

(My aside) There has to be a better way to discuss and inform about the DNA profiling process in court. This stuff puts me to sleep. Meanwhile a full 'military coup' is underway in Egypt.

Witness says that the statistics of same DNA are not based on the world population. Just as lottery statistics are not based on how many people enter.

Now we are looking at swabs that took samples from the inside of George's mouth as well as Trayvon's. These are used as "known" samples because it is known where the samples came from.

Simple chart of the locations on the DNA molecule for Zimmerman and Martin.

Amelogenin location is separate from the 13 Loci. and is the male or female designation. both have X, Y (which means they are both male).

Okay, that's the extent of my ability to focus on that chart.

Now witness is identifying evidence bags of swabs. #174 is comprised of 4 swabs from different parts of the gun. Each swab is seperate from the other.

West is now looking at page after page after page of State's exhibit #203 being offered as a summary of what was done in laboratory. He says okay, no objection to it being entered in evidence.

First chart on screen, the pistol grip of the Defendant's Gun. Yes for George, he concluded Trayvon was excluded.

Numbers in the Quadrillions and Quintillions.

Next, swab from pistol trigger. No test for blood. No mixture of DNA. Results too low to make an interpretation from.

Swab from pistol slide. No blood showed up. Made a comparison to try to exclude. Not enough material to include or exclude either.

Swab from the holster. Major matches with George. Not able to include or exclude Trayvon.

Evidence Package of Fingernail scrapings from Trayvon. A wooden stick used to extract material from between the nail and the skin.

State Exhibit #169 - Swab from Skittles and swab from flashlight. Publish to Jury. Swab from Skittles, possible presence for blood. Partial DNA profile did match Trayvon.
From the flashlight, no blood result, no dna result.

State is going to show some actual exhibits of the museum mounted clothes and the witness is off the stand, at the exhibits noting the places where he took cuttings for his testing samples (instead of using swabs). He examined 3 stains from the 'hoodie'. Documented in his notes what he did and when he did it along with photos he took when he did it.

Findings regarding the 'hoodie': State #119 photo of hoodie before the cuttings were taken. State's 203 Stain A front lower of shirt, positive for blood, partial DNA profile matches Trayvon.
Stain B, from aleeve, no blood..
Stain C, yes for blood, no DNA
He did Right sleeve and left sleeve cuffs, they were negative for blood, and no foreign DNA.
Swab collected test from about elbow to the end of the cuff. All the way around.

Exam or analysis on the shirt Trayvon was wearing on the shirt Trayvon was wearing underneath the hoodie. Did some testing around some stains at bottom of shirt. Did not test around the area of the bullet hole and blood.

Circled stains and labeled them,

Findings:

The gray shirt that was underneath the hoodie:

Stain A, positive for presence of blood, complete DNA profile which matched George Zimmerman.

Stain B, positive for blood, match to Trayvon.

Stain C, negative for blood.

Stain D, positive for blood, mixture of DNA, both are possible contributors. Large stain in middle of front surface

Stain E, positive for blood,

On the sleeve and cuff, right side, neg for blood, DNA nothing foreign to Trayvon.

Left side sleeve, no blood, but there was foreign DNA on that sleeve to Trayvon. Was not able to exclude George from that foreign DNA on the sleeve.

It sounds like a lot of the analysis you did was from samples collected by someone else...correct...he does not go to crime scenes... he does make determination of why DNA is not where it should be? correct, it just analysis what he is given...could rain affect...yes, moisture, heat, rain can degrade DNA..gun is a hard surface and DNA can be wiped off..
