Germany - Coronavirus COVID-19

The first part was filmed in my city on moday, in the street my office is actually located.

Little update from my hometown of half a million: just 3 active cases!
Still have to keep our distance and wear masks in shops and public transport.
Most people are back from home-office and working in their offices.

Are you surprised at the low number of cases overall? What do you attribute it to, considering lockdown is not really in effect anymore?

Discipline of people adhering to social distancing and wearing masks but the numbers are history already, up to 21 cases now.

Germany warns next coronavirus wave could be country's worst yet
Sat, March 27, 2021

“German officials warned Friday the third wave of the coronavirus in the country is going to be "harder to curb" and could be far worse than the previous two.

Why it matters: The number of new confirmed cases has jumped in recent weeks largely due to the more transmissible B.1.1.7 variant and the relaxation of some lockdown measures, according to Reuters.“

[...]

  • “Germany reported 21,573 new cases on Friday, about 4,000 more new cases than were reported a week ago, Deutsche Welle reported.
What they're saying: “There are clear signals that this wave will be worse than the first two waves,” said RKI head Lothar Wieler, according to Reuters.

  • “We have some very difficult weeks ahead of us,” he added, urging people to stay home over the Easter holiday.“

Coronavirus: Merkel aide warns of vaccine-resistant mutations | DW | 28.03.2021
German Chancellor Angela Merkel's chief of staff, Helge Braun, warned that the country still finds itself "in the most dangerous phase of the pandemic."

“Germany must bring down coronavirus infections in the next few weeks or risk new virus mutations that are resistant to vaccines, Chancellor Angela Merkel's chief of staff Helge Braun told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper.

"We are in the most dangerous phase of the pandemic," he added. "The next few weeks will determine whether we can foreseeably get the pandemic under control."

If the number of infections rises rapidly again, there is a growing danger that the next virus mutation will become resistant to the vaccine, Braun said.

"Then we would need new vaccines, then we would have to start vaccinating all over again," he pointed out.“

Germany: Federal government plans new powers over states to battle virus surge | DW | 09.04.2021

“The German federal government is planning to pass new legislation that will allow it to take control from states and impose uniform coronavirus restrictions across the country, Deputy Government Spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer announced on Friday.

Demmer told reporters in Berlin that the country's 16 state premiers had agreed to the new legislation in an effort to more effectively fight Germany's current surge in COVID-19 cases.

"The federal government plans to introduce draft legislation next week, in close coordination with the states, that includes a binding and comprehensive emergency brake for districts with an incidence of 100 cases and up," said Demmer.“

COVID: ICU bed shortage in Germany is imminent, doctors warn | DW | 09.04.2021

“A glance at the current map shows that the situation is critical again in some towns and municipalities, meaning that less than 10% of intensive care beds are free — and in some cases none at all. DIVI President Gernot Marx gave a clear statement during a press conference: "Every single day counts; we quickly need a hard lockdown of two or three weeks to lower the number of cases and give us more time for vaccinations."“
