Human remains were discovered Thursday morning at a roadway construction site near Kingston, Idaho, authorities said.

Shoshone County Undersheriff Holly Lindsey said in a Facebook post that the sheriff’s office was notified of the discovery at about 8:30 a.m.

Sheriff’s detectives and Idaho State Police troopers were processing the scene along with staff from the Shoshone County Prosecutor’s Office, Lindsey said.

There was no immediate indication of the age of the remains.

He was driving a maroon 1998 Ford Escort with the Montana license plate number 240997A at the time. He has never been heard from again. His car was later found abandoned.

ISP Captain John Kempf reports that the remains were recovered from the scene Friday afternoon after a significant amount of work.

“We had to drain essentially a swamp, dam it up and slowly but surely dig around this thing to try do the best we can to bring out as a whole piece.”

Because of the environment, crews were forced to take an amount of earth and other natural debris with the remains following the over 24-hour recovery process. The remains have since been transported to the medical examiner’s office in Spokane where an autopsy will be preformed early next week. Specifics on how much of a body was recovered and the condition of those remains are not being released at this time, but Kepmf states that “there’s quite a bit there, we were encouraged with the amount of remains we found.”

“The ground was such that we were able to bring it out in one big piece,” Kempf said. “When we get it back to the ME’s office, that’s when we’ll clean it up and see exactly what we have.”

Unknowns that still surround the case include who the deceased is, how they died, when they died and how their remains got to the location that they were found in. Detectives could not answer any of these unknowns with what was found at the scene due to several factors including the environment and weather. This is why the results of the autopsy are vital in determining what happened.

“We’re hoping sometime next week we have found something that would point us in the right direction as to who this person was and we’ll take it from there,” Kempf said.

Even without the results though, both SCSO and ISP are confident that the remains do not belong to 60-year old Shannan B. Souza of Kellogg, Idaho based on the location and amount of decay on the remains found.
The only missing person cold case still active in Shoshone County is that of Montana native Brian Shookman. Shookman was last seen leaving a friend’s house in Kellogg on July 28, 2012. He was suppose to be going to his aunt’s house in Osburn, Idaho later that day, but he never arrived and was never heard from since.

Detectives await lab results in Kingston body case
ISP captain John Kempf tells the News-Press that very little new information has been released since the body’s discovery in early June 2018 and following an autopsy weeks later.

“Nothing new,” he said of the case. “We have sent several items of evidence to the lab for analysis.”

The initial autopsy results of the remains failed to reveal any details as to the identity of the deceased, cause of death, or even how the remains got to where they were found.

Kempf and ISP detectives are banking on the pending DNA results to give them some new insights — even if they don’t come back with a positive ID.

"Authorities in North Idaho are still working to identify human remains found in June 2018.

Investigators have identified several descriptive features of the victim. Authorities believe the person was a white man, between the age of 45 and 65, who was approximately 5'10" tall, overweight and a smoker. The Shoshone County Sheriff's Office said the man smoked Signal brand cigarettes, which would have been purchased from either the Coeur d'Alene Casino or tribe stores.

Investigators also said the man wore Ariat brand cowboy boots size 9.5, likely wore dentures and had multiple long-healed broken bones. The Sheriff's Office said the man had broken ribs in a pattern suggesting a crush injury, fused vertebra, broken fingers and a clavicle. They believe the man died in June or July of 2014.

The Sheriff's Office said the man had a unique camouflage baseball cap with an embroidered quail on one side and the word "LeTourneau" across the front."
