Grandmother of Emmett girl who was found dead in trash bag denied reduced bond | ktvb.com

EMMETT, Idaho — The grandmother of the eight-year-old Emmett girl who was found dead inside a trash bag in a car in April appeared in the Gem County Courthouse on Thursday afternoon for a preliminary hearing.

Connie Ann Smith, 54, is charged with a felony failure to notify of death and destruction of evidence. Smith had previously waived her right to a speedy preliminary hearing.

Gem County Sheriff’s Office believes the body that was found in a black plastic trash bag in the trunk of Smith's car to be missing eight-year-old Taryn Summers. Investigators in Smith’s case have not released the name of the victim but refer to her as T.S.

Smith has not been charged with the murder.

Defense attorney Mark Coontz asked the Gem County Judge Tyler Smith to reschedule the preliminary hearing, which is now rescheduled to July 6 at 2 p.m.

Connie Smith was not a typical grandmother.

At just 54, she wore her chestnut hair long, loved to watch reality TV and was known around town for her tough-talking persona. But when her former daughter-in-law began struggling with drug and alcohol abuse, Smith took her three children — Tristan Sexton, 16; Taylor Summers, 14; and Taryn Summers, 8 — into her four-bedroom home in Emmett, Idaho.

"She talked about those children with pride," a family acquaintance tells PEOPLE in this week's issue. "I didn't think anything was wrong."

Smith is being held on $800,000 bond. She has waived her right to a speedy preliminary hearing, and will appear in court again on August 3.

She has not yet entered a plea, and her attorney did not immediately return PEOPLE's call for comment.

As the case progresses against Smith, those who thought they knew her are shocked at the little girl's death. "She was just as innocent as a little child could be," a former neighbor tells PEOPLE in its latest issue. "I pictured her running away with her little pink backpack and thought she'd be home for dinner. I guess I was wrong."

An ISP detective is now testifying "I kind of got that feeling," when he knew he had just found the body Taryn Summers. The trash bag was in the backseat area of Smith's car. #crimewatch

A Gem County detective said earlier testified Smith told him Taryn had run away from home between 4 and 5 p.m. She did not call authorities until around 7 p.m.

DNA results confirmed that the body found in the trash bag of Smith's car is that to Taryn Summers, according to an ISP detective.

CS was initially arrested on murder charges which were later dropped. She's been bound over for trial on lesser charges so that still leaves the question of who murdered this precious child?
