One shot one in custody. Still searching the building

WLFI News 18 ‏@WLFI 13m

Confirmed one person has been shot and one is in custody on PU campus.

Remember when school shootings or shootings in general were once in a while. Now it's everyday. No place is safe, movie theaters, schools, supermarkets.

The world gets scarier and scarier everyday.

My thoughts are with all involved.

There seems to be a school shooting every week. :sigh:

It is being said that this victim was targeted, it sounds like domestic abuse?

It is being said that this victim was targeted, it sounds like domestic abuse?

Don't think so. It is reported by Jconline (journalcourier) a purdue newspaper that the suspect is cody cousins. It has been reported that he targetd a TA teaching a class in the basement during a class.

A suspect identified as Cody Cousins, 23, was booked into Tippecanoe County Jail at 5:15 p.m. and was being held without bond in connection with the homicide, jail officials said.

Purdue Provost Timothy Sands confirmed one fatality resulted from the shooting. The victim was identified as a male. During a 2:30 p.m. news conference, officials released no identity, saying that would be up to the Tippecanoe County Coroner.

Graduated from purdue in May 2010 and I know so many people that go there currently or work there. I think I found his facebook page (easy to find search on facebook and he has his current city as west lafayette) But for me it is locked down...

Both are locked down and can't get much information from the pages though..

The Purdue Exponent is the student newspaper. The J-C is the Lafayette newspaper. Lafayette is across the river from Purdue and West Lafayette. The two cities are linked by bridges.

Officers from multiple agencies stormed the apartment building and executed a search warrant in Apartment 2, where Cousins lived. What they took was not clear. The street was sealed off at each end during the search.

For most of his Purdue career, Matyasovski has lived an arm's length away in Apartment 1.

"I lived next to this guy, and I knew Andrew (Boldt) as well. To imagine someone, such a nice guy like that, just gone ... life snatched away by somebody else I knew. It's not something I ever thought I would experience in my life.

"Obviously something was wrong in (Cousins') life. I don't know what ... I didn't see any outward expression of that."

No explanation yet why CC did this. Sounds like AB was very well-liked. I have a feeling his motive was similar to that of the killers of Annie Le and Christian Aguilar -- extreme envy.

BTW, the previous article indicates that CC also attacked AB with a knife. It's clear CC intended to kill someone, but why take 2 weapons to scene of crime?

Court documents released Thursday describe how police found Boldt with gunshot and stab wounds inside Room 067 in the basement of the electrical engineering building, where he was working as a teaching assistant.

Bloody footprints dotted the floor, and a knife and a handgun lay on the ground, along with several spent shell casings.

Andrew Pawling told the Purdue Exponent that he heard "pop" sounds while he was in the lab and turned to see his teaching assistant being killed "point blank."

"As I was turning around I heard another pop, then I saw my (teaching assistant) fall to the floor. The guy got on top of him and then shot him in the face, once or twice and maybe two more times," Pawling said.

Tom Novak, a senior from Hammond, Ind., lived down the street from Cousins and knew him through mutual friends.

"He was calm and calculating and smart," Novak said. "He wasn't a nice guy. He was rude and argumentative."

Novak recalled that Cousins would often show up at Novak's apartment unnannounced and tried to steer discussions to scientific ideas.

Cousins showed a streak of stubborness and always thought he was right, Novak said. "He was intelligent but he didn't have emotional intelligence," he said. "I feel like he lacked empathy."

Sounds like there wasn't any warning; CC just walked into the lab and attacked AB. I think that last part is key. I remember first seeing the mugshot of the killer and thinking how much it looks like Austin Sigg's mugshot.....same cold, glaring eyes.

Insanity defense filed in Purdue classroom killing

During standard questions from Busch to determine if Cousins qualified for a public defender on May 8, Busch asked if Cousins was under the influence of alcohol or drugs that might impair his ability to answer questions.

Cousins said he was taking a drug to balance out his moods, which was prescribed to him after he arrived at the Tippecanoe County Jail. Asked what ailment the drug treated, Cousins said schizophrenia.

Cousin’s trial current is scheduled to begin Oct. 6.

A judge has not yet ruled on whether to relocate the murder trial of a man charged with killing a fellow Purdue University student in a campus classroom.

Court records say Tippecanoe County Judge Thomas Busch on Friday appointed experts from an area mental health care agency to examine 23-year-old Cody Cousins, whose lawyer filed a formal insanity defense this week.

But he's taken under advisement defense attorney Kirk Freeman's motion to move the trial because of news coverage in the Lafayette area and attention that was drawn this month when Cousins said he was on medication for schizophrenia.
