Circumstances of Disappearance
Conor and his wife Shiela Dwyer from Fermoy have been missing since 1991. They lived at Chapel Hill, Fermoy, Co. Cork. They were last seen at St. Patrick's Church in Fermoy on 30th April 1991. On May 22 the alarm was raised when Ms Dwyer's sisters, Maisie and Nellie, became concerned at their inability to locate the couple and alerted Gardai. The Gardai went to the Dwyer home and found the house secure and all personal items such as clothes, passports and money still in the house. Their bank accounts were never accessed and, despite numerous appeals, TV reconstructions and even an RTE radio documentary, no confirmed trace of the couple was ever found. However their car, a white Toyota Cressida registration number 5797 ZT was not at the house and has not been located to date. The Blackwater and Lee rivers, airports and harbours have been searched, without success. In June 1991, a woman named Mary O'Dowd from Balyvolane met a couple fitting the Dwyers' description at Lourdes Airport. The man wore a cream colored trench coat and runners, while the woman had her hair up and was wearing a scarf. Mary O'Dowd heard them talking and understood they were irish. In 1993, Garda and Sheila's sister came to her, asking for description of the couple's clothing. It turned out these were the items of clothing missing from the Dwyers' house in Fermoy.
A possible sighting was reported in Munich in Germany in 1993 but both Bavarian police and Interpol were unable to confirm it. The German information intrigued Gardai because Mr Dwyer, a handyman, had worked for a time in Ireland for a German businessman. Rumours quickly spread including one that Conor senior, who it's claimed became a Quaker in the years before he went missing, had somehow got innocently mixed up in a drug-running business. Some locals recall him being a bubbly man but a 'Walter Mitty' character.
