Emergency services have rushed to a collapsed bridge in Italy where victims are feared to be trapped.

The huge structure in Genoa was destroyed this afternoon and emergency services are currently at the scene.

The bridge, also known as the Polcevera Viaduct, is named after it's architect Riccardo Morandi.

Construction began in 1962 and was completed in 1968.

'Dozens dead' as major road bridge collapses in Genoa
The Italian Ambulance Service says there are "dozens of dead", the Adnkronos news agency reported.

It is believed about 10 vehicles were involved when a 200m (650ft) section of the Morandi Bridge the bridge collapsed during a sudden and violent storm.

The collapse is believed to have been caused by a structural weakness, the ANSA news agency said.

(Risk of collapse of the spans at Morandi Bridge due to wind)

A news report dated 7 February 2018)

Rischio crollo per il vento dei ponteggi a Ponte Morandi, sulla Genova-Savona

You'll need to run it through Google Translate if you don't read Italian.

ETA that basically it says that the bridge had to be closed to all traffic in February due to problems experienced in high winds and that police and fire fighters were on site while work was carried out to secure it.

Genoa bridge collapses in violent Italian storm
An 80-metre section of the Morandi Bridge on the A10 motorway came down in an industrial area of the port city during a sudden and violent storm at about 11.30am (0930 GMT), trapping cars and trucks under the rubble.
A fire service spokesperson told Agence France-Presse that the bridge had mostly fallen on rail tracks 100 metres below and that “cars and trucks” had fallen with the rubble. A witness told Sky Italia television he saw “eight or nine” vehicles on the bridge when it collapsed in what he said was an “apocalyptic scene”.

Reposting my earlier overhead view of the bridge.

Google Maps

I think the sections that have collapsed are:

(1) the tower on the left;
(2) the section of road to the right, between that tower and what appears to be a darker line right across the width of the bridge just before you reach the cables for the next tower; and
(3) the section to the left of the collapsed tower as far as the long building with white roof and grey stripes.

I've no idea if the darker lines across the bridge are points of structural weakness or simply where surface works have been carried out on the road.
