Residents go missing without a trace around Clearwater

This is the second part of a two-part series about people who have disappeared from Clearwater over the last three decades.

  • By LESTER R. DAILEY

Jayme Lynn Engstrom was only 22 years old when she disappeared, but they were hard years.
The Pennsylvania native moved to Pinellas County with her mother when she was 10, following the breakup of her parents, who had married at 17. She went to Dunedin Middle and High schools, but dropped out at 16.
She got in with a bad crowd, began stealing and writing bad checks, started using drugs and soon became a crack addict, according to interviews her mother, Vicki Lynn Engstrom, gave to sheriff’s deputies and the press shortly after the disappearance.

She went back to Pennsylvania in 1989, allegedly in fear for her life because of a drug deal gone awry in Florida. There, she moved in with a man and bore him twin sons, but the relationship was stormy, and Engstrom spent a lot of time in abuse shelters or jail.

She returned to Pinellas County in 1991, bringing her boyfriend and sons with her. But they later moved back to Pennsylvania and subsequently came back to Florida.
Along the way, she was in and out of rehab and racked up an extensive arrest record for solicitation for prostitution, soliciting for a lewd act, drug possession and theft. She also gave birth to a daughter, whom she put up for adoption, and split up with her boyfriend when she caught him cheating on her.
Engstrom stayed with friends in the area around N. Fort Harrison Avenue. She was last seen at 8:43 p.m. on Feb. 20, 1994, when Clearwater police stopped her for walking down the middle of the road in the 1300 block of Cleveland Street. There was speculation, but no proof, that she fell victim to James M. Randall, an alleged serial killer of mid-Pinellas prostitutes at that time.

Engstrom would now be 36 years old. When she disappeared, she stood 5-foot-4 and weighed 115 pounds. She is white, with blonde hair, blue eyes and a rose tattoo on her upper right arm. Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts should call the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office at 582-6200.
Patricia E. “Patty” Action was 25 years old when she went missing on May 26, 1978. She was last seen leaving the Ramada Inn Lounge around 11:30 p.m. in her 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle. The car was found abandoned on U.S. 19 in Tarpon Springs a few days later.
Action is white and would now be 54 years old.
Margaret Dash was 33 years old when she was last seen, on June 14, 1974. Her husband reported her missing, and added that she had been having an affair with a 23-year-old man named Cleveland Hill. The husband claimed that Hill had threatened to kill Mrs. Dash if she didn’t leave her husband and run away with him.

Her car was found two months later in St. Petersburg. At the time, police said that Hill was also connected with the disappearance of Retha Ingram-Hires, 34, and Donyelle Johnson, age 6.
Dash is African-American and would now be 70 years old. Anyone with information about Action or Dash should call the Clearwater Police Department at 562-4080.

The telephone calls from Jayme Lynn Engstrom stopped more than two years ago.
Since then, her twin sons have turned 6. They started school Wednesday, but they will not be sharing that milestone with their mother.
Engstrom, who would be 24 now, is missing.
She has not telephoned her mother in Clearwater or seen her children since Jan. 7, 1994.
Pinellas County sheriff's detectives are seeking help in finding Engstrom. They are concerned about her whereabouts because of a series of prostitute murders.
Engstrom's criminal record includes arrests for prostitution, soliciting for a lewd act, possession of drugs and theft. Sheriff's Sgt. Greg Tita said she was arrested in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts for prostitution. Locally, she worked alongside and stayed with people who lived near N Fort Harrison Avenue.

It was the death of prostitute Cynthia Pugh _ one of four N Fort Harrison Avenue prostitutes found murdered in the past two years _ that set off alarms.
Tita said Vicki L. Engstrom, 42, contacted detectives when a photograph of Pugh was publicized because Pugh closely resembled her daughter. Both women are described as small, blond and very attractive.
Pugh, 27, was found strangled in January in the parking lot of a building on U.S. 19. Her murder was the latest of four that detectives say were committed by a serial killer.
In July 1994, Ladonna Jean Steller was found dead in a lot on Drew Street near where Engstrom stayed with a friend. Last year, Wendy Ann Evans was murdered in October, and Peggy Darnell was killed a month later.
All the bodies were nude. All the women had been seen on N Harrison Avenue before they were killed.
Tita said detectives had not established any link between Engstrom's disappearance and James M. Randall, whom authorities have identified as the only suspect in the murders.
Randall, 41, of Dunedin, was arrested July 1 after he eluded deputies in a four-day manhunt. He remains in the Pinellas jail, where he is being held without bail on a Massachusetts violation of probation warrant. He also faces local charges resulting from the manhunt, but he has not been charged with murder.

"The possibility of him being linked with Engstrom is there," Tita said. "Consistencies with her disappearance and the facts surrounding those four murder victims puts her on the same page as the victims."
Vicki Engstrom, who declined to comment for this story, reported her daughter missing Dec. 29, 1995. She told detectives that she last saw her when she took her to get a driver's license. That was in January 1994. Ms. Engstrom continues to care for her daughter's children.

Im from Clearwater/Dunedin area. She was probably staying at one of those Motels on FT Harrison. In the 1970s to 1990s they where known for drugs and prostitution. Eventually in the late 1990s the church of scientlology bought some of them out and cleaned them up for their visiting members to stay I assume.
I watched an episode of Living with Evil about James Randall. It makes sense that Jayme could be one of his victims but Im not sure that is likely. The victims bodies were found that I read about. He did drive some of them to other areas to dump. But it was like he wanted them to be found. Jayme was never found.

but what im stuck on is that if he was close to her maybe he wanted to keep her from being found because he wanted her all for himself
