Forty-seven-year-old Kevin Lionel McBride advertised for a roommate for his 5600 Sheppard Avenue East apartment. Police believe a man responding to that ad on Saturday May 15, 1982, is the one who murdered him. McBride was found, fully clothed, stabbed to death on his living room floor. Police were called and found him stabbed multiple times in both the front and back of the upper torso. His car and credit cards had been stolen.

In June, 1982, two men used one of McBride’s credit cards multiple times in Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan after the murder, but they were not caught. Witnesses described the man using the credit card as being in his mid 20s to early 30s, white, 6’2″ with dark brown wavy hair. A composite drawing of the taller suspect and a $10,000 reward did not help police solve the crime. McBride’s car, a black 1979 Oldsmobile 98 with wire wheel covers, red interior and a sun roof, was found months later, on September 22, in Rochester, Minnesota. His killer or killers have not been found.

HUNTER: March mayhem unmasked in Toronto cold cases | Toronto Sun
''Kevin Lionel McBride, 47, immigrated to Canada from Australia in the mid-1960s and became a successful interior designer and antiques dealer.

He was looking for someone to share his apartment at 5600 Sheppard Ave. E. and placed a classified ad.

Detectives believe the man who responded to the ad murdered McBride on May 15, 1982. When the punctual designer didn’t show up for a dinner with pals on May 17, they became alarmed.

His friends convinced the superintendent of his building to let them check on the gay man’s welfare.

Lying dead on his living room floor, full-clothed, was McBride. He had been stabbed multiple times.

Gone were his car and credit cards.

For cops, there was a scent to the trail of the killers but not much more. The next month, two men used the dead man’s credit cards in Detroit and Windsor.

In September 1982, six months after the brutal murder, McBride’s black 1979 Oldsmobile 98 was found in Rochester, Minn.''

''In May 1982 Kevin McBride, who was 47 at the time, was the victim of a homicide and died by multiple stab wounds inside his apartment at 311-5600 Sheppard Ave East. Officers were originally asked to attend Kevin's residence by concerned friends who had dinner plans with him and were unable to reach him. Kevin McBride lived alone and was not associated with any criminality. He was last seen on May 15, 1982, two days prior to his body being located. A thorough investigation was conducted in 1982 and investigators were able to determine that the deceased’s vehicle, a credit card and other effects had been stolen and used between May 15 and May 17, 1982, suggesting the date of the murder was May 15, 1982.

The case remained unsolved and was revisited in 2016 by Toronto Police Homicide Cold Case investigators. The primary focus of the ensuing investigation was to re-test exhibits and seized items from the original investigation to determine if advancements in forensic testing and a DNA databank creation could determine any further leads. Testing of evidence found at the crime scene revealed a male profile, not of the deceased. However the identity of the man who left behind this male profile was could not be determined.''

''On Monday, homicide investigators are announcing they have solved the brutal stabbing death of Australian immigrant McBride, who had lived in Canada for about 17 years when he was slain.

''The killer — if still alive — would have been charged with first-degree murder, Det. Sgt. Steve Smith, cold case unit leader, told the Toronto Sun.
The suspect’s name was William Taylor and he died last May in Alberta. He was 75.
“Mr. McBride was an art dealer and these guys (Taylor and a suspected fence) had lived in the same places and they set out to rob him,” Smith said. “But Taylor died just before we got onto him.”
Taylor was an American citizen and knew McBride, an avid collector of valuable artifacts. Smith said a fence was also implicated — though not in the murder itself — and proving guilt after nearly 42 years would be difficult.''

Testing of evidence found at the crime scene revealed a male profile, not of the deceased. In 2022, Investigative Genetic Genealogy was utilized along with a private science lab and the suspect William Taylor was identified.

William Taylor passed away in May 2023. DNA testing revealed that Mr. Taylor, who was 34 at the time of the homicide, was the source of the unknown DNA left at the crime scene. If William Taylor was alive today, he would be arrested and charged with First Degree Murder in the death of Kevin McBride.

The Toronto Police Service would like to thank the Edmonton Police Service, the Calgary Police Service, New York State Troopers and Othram Inc. for their assistance in the conclusion of this investigation.''

The murder of 47-year-old Kevin McBride remained unsolved since 1982, however, through the power of advanced DNA technology, the cold case has been solved by Toronto Police more than four decades later.McBride was found dead in his Markham, Ont., apartment on May 17, 1982. He died of multiple stab wounds. Investigators suggested he was killed on May 15, 1982.It wasn’t until 2016 that the Toronto Police revisited the case. They said they wanted to “re-test exhibits and seized items from the original investigation to determine if advancements in forensic testing and a DNA databank creation could determine any further leads.”Using Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) in a private lab, investigators discovered DNA from not McBride, but the suspect — who was identified as William Taylor. Taylor was 34 years old at the time of McBride’s murder, however, died in May 2023. Global's Catherine McDonald reports.

''The family of a slain Scarborough man hope news of his cracked, decades-old cold case brings comfort to other victim families waiting for justice to be served.''

''While the family is glad to have answers, they say justice hasn't been served yet. There remain several questions concerning why the death occurred, and they hope that isn't the case for other families of homicide victims waiting for developments in their cold cases.''

''Wicks said he had a reputation both in the country and overseas as a "very kind, fun-loving, generous person."

"He made so many friends both in Canada and different, other countries he visited," she said.

He had a knack for window dressing and loved photography, his family said. On top of his taste for good-quality furniture, antiques and cars, he was known for dressing well.''

''Taylor was separated from his wife years ago and had no children. Little is known about him other than he was an American with connections to New York and Michigan. At the time of the slaying in 1982, Taylor was living close to the victim but there was no known connection between the men. He had been living in western Canada for a number of years.
There is no evidence, so far, that Taylor was involved in any other violent crimes but “we have 40 years now to do a deep dive to see if there’s anything else we can find,” Smith said.''
