Craig Stebic, the husband of missing Plainfield mother Lisa Stebic, has a court date next month to ask a judge to order police to give him two dozen guns they took from him last year.

As CBS 2's Katie McCall reports, Stebic is following in the footsteps of another high profile husband whose wife is also missing.

Craig Stebic wants his 24 guns -- most of them rifles and shotguns, and at least one 25 caliber handgun -- returned to the Plainfield home from which his wife vanished almost one year ago.

Stebic, who is a person of interest in his wife's disappearance, heads to court next month to ask a judge for the weapons as well as a pickup truck and a Saturn sedan.

JOLIET — Craig Stebic’s in-laws think he is intentionally dragging his feet on their child visitation case.

Lisa Stebic’s parents and grandparents, Lawrence and Judith Ruttenberg and Milton and Charlotte Ruttenberg, filed a petition in November seeking visitation rights to the two Stebic children, ages 11 and 12.

On Feb. 14, judge Robert Brumund denied a motion from Craig Stebic to dismiss the Ruttenbergs’ petition. When Stebic’s attorney, Dion Davi, followed up with a motion to reconsider that ruling, the Ruttenbergs’ attorney Timothy Daw filed an emergency motion requesting a hearing Wednesday.

In his motion Daw pointed out that Craig Stebic was able to file a motion Feb. 29 seeking the return of his vehicles and 24 guns that were taken by police during a search of his house last spring, but that Stebic has yet to respond to the visitation petition that has been pending for three months.

Craig Stebic can have his Saturn returned, it was decided Wednesday, but he'll have to wait a few more weeks to find out if he can have his weapons and pickup.

Before the hearing began this morning, Judge Richard Schoenstedt and the Will County State's Attorney's Office agreed Stebic could have his Saturn. But it was decided that a status hearing would be necessary Friday before Stebic could take the vehicle.

On Wednesday, Will County Judge Richard Schoenstedt and the Will County State's Attorney's Office agreed that Stebic could have his Saturn Ion returned today following a status hearing.

But Schoenstedt took only a brief look at the offiical request by Stebic's attorney George Lenard before ordering that Stebic himself needed to appear in court. Schoenstedt apparently wants to make sure that Stebic understands the vehicle still may be called into evidence if anyone is ever charged in the disappearance of his wife, Lisa.

The judge spoke to Stebic briefly, and the Plainfield man agreed not to object to the possible use of 23 digital photographs instead of the car.

Then Fitzgerald and Lenard asked the judge to impound and seal the court order returning the car to keep it from the public. Lenard asked for a private hearing with the judge to explain the request.

Later in the morning, Schoenstedt announced his decision.

"I’m not going to give my reasons for the ruling on the record," Schoenstedt "I am not going to order the order impounded."

JOLIET -- Craig Stebic's in-laws are using a petition seeking visitation rights to his children to mine for information about his wife's disappearance, Stebic's lawyer said Monday.

Timothy Daw, an attorney for missing Plainfield mom Lisa Stebic's parents and grandparents, Lawrence and Judith Ruttenberg and Milton and Charlotte Ruttenberg, said the couples just want to see the children and that Stebic has prohibited any contact.

When Craig Stebic picked up his car Monday from the Plainfield police, something was wrong.

A blanket was gone. When Plainfield police seized the car last year, it was in the trunk. So George Lenard, Stebic’s attorney, filed a motion in court Tuesday asking for an explanation.

When the car was released to Stebic Monday, the judge’s court order indicated that everything inside the vehicle also would be returned. Plainfield police detective Troy Kivisto told Stebic and Lenard the same thing, according to Lenard’s motion. And at least one photograph of the car taken by an FBI agent showed the blanket in the trunk.

"Stebic and his attorney are entitled to know where it is located and ... (it should be) returned if the government cannot show that it still has a legitimate need to retain it," Lenard wrote, adding that he also wants to know if any forensic testing has been done on the blanket.

Lenard wouldn’t comment on the case Wednesday except to say that he would argue the issue in court April 24.

Police on patrol have been cruising around Nature’s Crossing subdivision more than usual — particularly on the 13200 block of Red Star Lane, some residents say.

That’s where Craig Stebic lives. And his family, as well as his neighbors, have noticed a more prominent police presence lately.

"It just seems like they’re around more, which we really like because it’s tense over there," said one resident who did not want her name printed. "There’s no question they’re around more. Why? I have no idea."

Are police 'harassing' Stebic?

"It just seems like they're around more, which we really like because it's tense over there," said one resident who did not want her name printed. "There's no question they're around more. Why? I have no idea."
Police Chief Don Bennett declined to comment.
Recently police stopped Craig's father, Joe Stebic, near the house and cited him for driving a vehicle with a cracked windshield.
Craig was cited in January for the same reason, while driving the same vehicle. The charge was later dropped, according to court records.
"It just seems like (police are) harassing them," said Craig's brother, Scott Stebic, who has been staying at the house. "I feel safe now, the neighborhood is being well-patrolled."

PLAINFIELD — Craig and Lisa Stebic may have had a rocky relationship, and lived the last six months of their marriage before Lisa disappeared on April 30, 2007, barely speaking to each other.

But Craig’s family says he is not an abusive father, nor was he an abusive husband.

And the charity Lisa’s family picked — Guardian Angel Community Services in Joliet — to support with an April 27 fundraiser unfairly paints Craig as an abuser, his family says.

JOLIET — Craig Stebic has to respond to his in-laws’ requests for information made through their grandchild visitation case, a judge decided Friday.

And Stebic, who has been named a “person of interest” in his wife’s disappearance, is free to invoke his fifth amendment right against self-incrimination, said Will County Judge Robert Brumund.

Stebic’s lawyer Dion Davi resisted a request for discovery filed by Lisa Stebic’s parents and grandparents, who he says are seeking visitation rights to their grandchildren as well as answers about their missing loved one.

But attorney George Lenard said he was more concerned that Plainfield police haven’t returned a blanket found in the trunk of Lisa Stebic’s Saturn Ion when that car was seized last May.

Schoenstedt ordered police earlier this month to return the Saturn to Craig Stebic — which they did — though they kept the blanket for forensic testing.

Schoenstedt also declined today to order investigators to immediately return the blanket.

Stebic's lawyer, George Lenard, told the judge during the hearing that a blanket was missing from the 2004 Saturn Ion that Stebic picked up from Plainfield police on April 7. Will County Assistant State's Atty. Michael Fitzgerald said he sent the blanket to the state crime lab that day for testing.

Schoenstedt said he would reconsider whether to return the truck, firearms and blanket at a hearing on June 24.

On Thursday, Lenard came to Will County Judge Richard Schoenstedt's courtroom seeking the return of the guns, the truck and the blanket. At the beginning of the hearing, Will County Assistant State's Attorney Mike Fitzgerald asked to speak to the judge privately. Then he went into the back hallway with Schoenstedt and the court reporter.

When they returned, Fitzgerald said there was a new reason for the state to keep Stebic's guns. His brother, Scott Stebic, is living in the home on Red Star Drive, and he's been convicted of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, a felony, Fitzgerald argued. Scott Stebic is on probation and isn't supposed to have a gun.
