MA MA - Shana Price, 17, beaten, strangled & sexually assaulted, Springfield, 26 Dec 1990

Wow. There really isn't anything else about her available online is there? It was only back in 1990, not 1945. Poor Shana, so young.

Noting from 2010.. rbbm

''Bennett said he knows of no connection between Gaynor and a number of other unsolved homicides of Springfield women found dead between 1990 and Alfred J. Gaynor's arrest on April 8, 1998. The women are Shana R. Price, 17, of 73 Dartmouth St., found strangled, beaten and sexually assaulted at Blunt Park on Dec. 26, 1990; Myrtle Marrett, 90, found beaten Jan. 20, 1991, in her Union Street apartment; Lisa DiSilva, 21, found strangled in her apartment at 26 Tracy St. on April 1, 1991; Corine L. Lee, 32, found strangled in a downtown location on May 25, 1992; and Celestina Perez, 24, found strangled and beaten June 2, 1995, in Gurdon Bill Park.''

There is a reference to Shana's murder in this book..

''SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – There are sixty-five unsolved homicides in Springfield according to the Hampden District Attorney’s website. IST: Unsolved homicides in Hampden County''

  1. ''Shana Renee Price
    • December 26, 1990
    • 17 years-old
    • Found beaten, strangled and sexually assaulted in Blunt Park in Springfield.''

Looking back through the archives of the Springfield Union News (now The Republican/MassLive, I found the following bits of info (I'm not sure how to share these other than with notes, viewing old articles requires article purchase):
--Shana had a son, Mark Joseph Price (obituary, 12/28/1990)
The following items come from the same paper, same day, actual news story.
--She lived with her grandmother.
--She was not attending school at the time.
--Her nude body was left "draped over a wooden fence near the entrance of Blunt Park.
Jan. 3, 1991
--There is no suspect or motive.
Jan 4, 1991
--Shana had gone to the Ludlow police station one month earlier to report that "a man in a car wanted to kill her." At the time she was told it would be investigated if she could provide more details.

A little more.

From the Sunday Republican, Aug 3, 2003. Shana's name was included on a memorial to twelve murdered women in Court Square, Springfield.

The other slain women listed on the monument are Corine Lee, Myrtle Marrett, Lisa DiSilva, Vera E. Hallums, Celestina Perez, Terri Y.C. Thomas, Robin M. Atkins, JoAnn C. Thomas, Loretta Daniels, Rosemary A. Downs, and Joyce L. Dickerson-Peay.

Alfred J. Gaynor, 33, formerly of 45 Moxon St., Indian Orchard, was arrested on April 8, 1998, and subsequently convicted in the killings of JoAnn Thomas, Daniels, Downs, and Dickerson-Peay.

He is serving a life sentence without parole.

There is a murder warrant out for Antonio G. James in the slaying of Terri Thomas.

From a Feb 15, 1998 piece in the Republican on the number of unsolved murders of women in Springfield:
Celestina Perez, 24, of 807 Liberty St., found strangled and severely beaten June 2, 1995, in Gurdon Bill Park.
Some basic similarities between the two murders. Gaynor was also ruled out in Celestina's case.
When Gaynor was arrested in April 1998, five months after Perez's murder, detectives went back and tried to place him with the victim, he said.

"We looked into his involvement in this one," he said. Police also identified another suspect, someone McFarlin identified as "a local guy from the neighborhood."

Ultimately the investigations were unable to pin either suspect to the crime, and it remains unsolved. McFarlin said there are no plans to include the Perez case with the four that are reactivated.

Hampden DA poised to announce development in 1990 Springfield murder investigation of 17-year-old Shana Price

Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni is poised to announce a development in the unsolved murder of 17-year-old Shana Price that dates back more than 30 years.

A spokesman for Gulluni was not specific about the development and said more information will come at a press conference Wednesday morning.

Unfortunately not a solve. They released predictions of the murderer's appearance based on DNA/phenotypes and are asking again for leads. Hopefully this will spark someone to come forward. Shana deserves justice.

''A single source of male DNA evidence was found during a police investigation. The DNA was tested and in 2003 was shared to state, national and international investigators, including Interpol, but no results were found. Recently the DA’s office was able to use modern DNA technology through Parabon NanoLabs to create prediction sketches of the possible suspect.''

''The sketches are what the suspect may have looked like at 25-years-old (left) and 57-years-old (right) with an average body-mass index (BMI) of 22. BMI can not be determined through DNA. The testing of the DNA resulted in the following characteristics of the possible suspect:
  • A man
  • Brown to light brown complexion
  • Brown/hazel eyes
  • Black hair color
  • Zero to few freckles
  • His ancestry has been predicted to be African Admix, which may include African-Caribbean, Latino Dominican Republic or African American.
“Let me be clear: to the person responsible for Shana’s murder, we have your DNA. We have your genetic characteristics. Justice is coming for you''
