Once upon a time, thirty years ago, this was an infamous New England case, but now it has very little online presence. Online, even the exact date of the victim's murder is obscure -- sometime between Christmas and New Year's Eve. Susan Simoni's murder was never solved, and some believe it stayed that way because the main suspect, her wealthy, politically connected husband, was protected by a district attorney, William D. Delahunt, who was also protecting his own interests: he was rumored to have been seen dining with Susan a short time before her murder and a dalliance with a married woman -- even one from one of the wealthiest families in Norwood -- wouldn't look good for his future political prospects.

Bill Delahunt later was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts' 10th District from 1997 to 2011.

One of Norwood’s own, Susan Simoni, the former Susan Gagnon, shortly after 5 p.m. in December 1989, left her job as a medical secretary to pick up her dog from a groomer and her daughter from a dance class, investigators said. She picked up the dog, but never arrived at the dance class.

Her body was found the next morning inside her new Jeep parked behind The Walpole Mall. At 37 years of age, she was shot twice in the chest. Susan’s husband Brian Simoni became an immediate suspect, but two grand juries failed to hand down an indictment, even with evidence that included the dog miraculously ending up back in the garage, and a handbook on divorce being found in a paper bag in a trash container. Brian’s Smith & Wesson revolver, the same type of handgun used in the slaying, had been fired only twice and the box of ammunition for that gun was missing two bullets.

To this day, no one has been found responsible for her death.

Later, investigators discovered that Susan Simoni had planned to divorce her husband Brian.

Her body was found inside the couple's new Jeep Grand Wagoneer parked behind The Mall at Walpole. Dressed in slacks, sweater, and overcoat, Susan, 37, was sprawled face down over the front seat and floor. She had been shot twice in the chest with a.38- caliber gun.

A dog, a book, and a gun were among the clues that made authorities focus their attention on her husband. Brian Simoni, through lawyers, has maintained his innocence.

An affidavit -- filed by a state trooper in Dedham District Court six days after the murder, in support of a search warrant for the family home and Brian Simoni's vehicle and airplane -- outlined investigators' suspicions.

He denied he and his wife were having marital problems.

Two grand juries considered evidence but never returned an indictment.
