‏@vplus - 4:03 AM - 1 May 2014 - Malaysian Airlines closing the "Family Assistance Centres" for the missings' families on May 7th. #MH370

At this point, we don't know where it is, so I will take any lead.

But, with that being said, I don't think Australia would waste resources if it isnt in S Indian ocean. Unless they were being led down the rose garden path.

I agree - I think searching in the S Indian Ocean is because of the best available information they have - which has resulted in an educated estimate. I think if they had better, educated estimates, they would look there, too. I really don't think it i any more complicated than that

This release will say totally nothing that all of us here have not shared or discussed - not one thing!

Ok, maybe i'm not understanding. Immarsat went by the last ping at 8:11am (what time zone?) ! wouldn't they take into account the speed and altitude to determine it's final resting place? The weight should be accurate, unless MAS did not provide accurate weight.

I'd like to find documentation on how they came to this conclusion.

There is a lot of information online, and I find this article from the WSJ online quite informative about how they calculated the location and the arcs.

Since there is no specific data about speed and altitude, they estimated the flight path (including speed and altitude) from the pings themselves.

http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304017604579443603302188102

From the article:
Because the angle and distance of the aircraft relative to the orbiting satellite changed as the jet flew over the Earth's surface, each ping to Flight 370 gave Malaysian officials, the National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.K.'s Air Accidents Investigation Branch enough information to plot the 777's speed, altitude and changing path.

I think if they had speed and altitude of course this would all be a lot easier for everyone. As it is, they are forced to rely on the best available estimate they have at the moment. I think it is pretty amazing they were able to come up with an educated estimate at all - therefore I am not so critical of the attempt.

Of course, it could be wrong, but my point is that it is not an uneducated guess. As they are saying, it is the best available estimate they have at the moment. I am confident they would move if a better estimate was available.

Malaysia Airlines says its family support centers at Lido Hotel in Beijing and "around the world" will be closed by May 7.

The Lido center will close Friday, an airline official told families there.

Instead of staying in hotels to hear daily briefings, the relatives of MH370 passengers are invited to receive updates "within the comfort of their own homes," the airline said...

This is a pilot's rumor blog where they are discussing the found container. Someone posted a diagram of a cargo fire extinguisher in their post. They aren't posting rumors but trying to dispel them.

They have some theories I had not heard before but I did not post on this site, not sure if it was allowed.
Many posters believe that the GeoResonance claim is rubbish

Cnn: 450 pounds of batteries Not true - there were 2.5 tons of lithium batteries!!

There is no way they did not know that from the moment the plane pushed back -not being aware of 2.5 tons of anything on any aircraft at any time results in a crash - they must know what and where - center of gravity issues vital or if wrong fatal.

Sounds like they might have confused the weight of some fruit wiht a classification 9 (most dangeroues) item.................US wont even let them on our passenger planes

The dreamliner (Boeings new baby) has had many fire related problems related to lithium batteries

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia has made public a preliminary report on flight MH370 and other data that marks its most extensive release of information on the missing airliner to date.

The five-page report, which was submitted earlier to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), was essentially a recap of information that has already been released, and did not immediately appear to contain any major revelations.

Malaysian authorities have also released includes:
•The audio recordings of conversations between the cockpit of MH370 and Kuala Lumpur air traffic control.
•The preliminary report into MH370, dated 9 April.
•An additional document, which gives further information regarding the actions taken between the hours of 01:38 and 06:14 on Saturday 8 March.
•A map showing MH370’s flight path.
•The cargo manifest for MH370.
•The seating plan for MH370.

The theories can go on the "What do you think happened to Flight370" thread. That way if something turns up later it will be easier to find. Little harder when there are 23 threads to go through.

Nothing we haven't read already

We know that airlines are not currently required to to install Real Time Tracking on aircrafts..and they recommend that the International Civil Aviation Organization examine the benefits of real time tracking of commercial airplanes.

If anything comes about from this tragedy I believe it will be the mandatory installation of Real Time Tracking of an aircraft
