Police have reopened the case into the disappearance of Melbourne woman Marcia Ryan, who was last seen on the side of a highway in Gippsland on her way to the Gold Coast.

The 33-year-old and her dog, Ziggy, vanished on a rainy night in August 1996 after she stopped her Mitsubishi Sigma on the side of the Princes Freeway near Moe.

The Seaford woman had left work unwell earlier that day and raced home to grab her dog before leaving her friend and brother in the driveway begging her not to go.

She owned her own home and held a steady job at her uncle and aunty's trucking logistics company.

She called her parents in Queensland on a public phone to tell them she was on her way, but she never showed up.

Over the past 28 years, numerous witnesses have reported seeing Ms Ryan that night, and an ABC radio series has unearthed new clues about her disappearance.

Her parents died never knowing what happened to her.

Ms Ryan's surviving relatives are hoping answers will come from the renewed police focus on her disappearance.

Victoria Police say detectives are now "actively investigating" her disappearance and any new information received about the case will be thoroughly assessed.
