PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — The chief prosecutor in the Oscar Pistorius trial urged the judge on Friday to send the Olympic athlete to prison for at least 10 years, calling it the minimum acceptable term and noting the horrific nature of the shooting death of Reeva Steenkamp.

Judge Thokozile Masipa is expected to announce Pistorius' sentence on Tuesday. She adjourned court Friday after chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel and chief defense lawyer Barry Roux presented their final arguments for sentencing, summing up the testimony in the weeklong hearing.

The lawyer asked Judge Masipa to consider the South African principle of "ubuntu", roughly translated as kindness towards others, in her sentencing.

He also claimed that Pistorius would be unsafe in prison, a claim denied by the prisons chief on Thursday.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel said that the minimum sentence "society would be happy with" would be 10 years in prison.

Judge Thokozile Masipa also gave Pistorius a three-year suspended sentence for a firearms charge.

The parents of Reeva Steenkamp told the BBC they were happy with the sentence and relieved the case was over. The defence said it expected Pistorius to serve about 10 months in prison.

State lawyer Gerrie Nel called for Pistorius to spend at least a decade behind bars, telling the hearing: “The minimum term that society will be happy with will be 10 years imprisonment. This is a serious matter. The negligence borders on intent. Ten years is the minimum.''

Defense lawyer Barry Roux said a community-based sentence was more appropriate because of the remorse Pistorius had shown. He said there was "no deviousness" and "no conscious unlawfulness" from the athlete, who actions “were to some extent dominated by vulnerability and anxiety."

Steenkamp's parents were also in court to hear the sentence and the dead model's mother, June, said justice had been done. A close friend of Steenkamp, Gina Myers, said: "I really don't think any of us will heal anytime soon ... there will always be questions."

Pistorius' uncle, Arnold Pistorius, said: "Oscar will embrace this opportunity to pay back to society." He appealed to reporters to give the family privacy after what he called "20 months of relentless public trial."

Pistorius' uncle also criticized state prosecutors for pursuing a premeditated charge against Pistorius, and said "they decided to inflict as much collateral damage as they could."

The NPA, however, has indicated that it has an "appetite" to appeal. "We have always stated first and foremost that we were disappointed with the conviction," NPA spokesman Nathi Mncube told reporters.

Officials described Pistorius as tense and nervous when he was fingerprinted upon his arrival. Prison commissioner Zebilon Monama told the South African Press Association that the jail’s chaplain and psychologist met with Pistorius, as he tried to adjust to his new surroundings. He underwent a medical examination before going into his cell.

Asked if she believed the athlete's account that he shot Steenkamp through a locked toilet door under the mistaken belief that she was an intruder, June Steenkamp expressed skepticism.
"No -- there's more to the whole story than everybody knows, only Oscar knows," she said.

There, he will have undergone a health risk assessment within six hours of arrival, Morwane said. Within 21 days, a comprehensive assessment of his needs will be done.
