Jury selection begins for Jason Young retrial

ALEIGH, N.C. — The second trial for a 37-year-old man accused of killing his pregnant wife more than five years ago got under way Tuesday in a Wake County courtroom with prosecutors and defense attorneys selecting jurors to hear the case.

Jason Lynn Young is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Michelle Marie Fisher Young, who was found beaten to death in her home just south of Raleigh on Nov. 3, 2006.

Jason Young's daughter spoke of him during 911 call

RALEIGH, N.C. — The 2-year-old daughter of Jason and Michelle Young talked about her father during a 911 call on the day her mother was found dead in their home, Michelle Young's sister testified Wednesday.

Young, 37, is facing a retrial in his pregnant wife's Nov. 3, 2006, slaying. A jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict in his first trial in June.

RALEIGH -- RALEIGH -- The woman prosecutors have brought forth as their only eyewitness to support their version of Jason Young's movements around the time of his wife's homicide testified this morning that she has been having memory problems in the ensuing years.

"I've had memory problems since '06 because I've been through a lot with my kids, myself and my husband," Gracie Bailey Dahms testified today, the day after Judge Donald Stephens agreed to let the defense team bring up a head injury the witness suffered after being struck by a delivery truck when she was 6 years old.

Bailey said she and some friends were playing ball at the time. She chased a ball into the street and can only rely on what her parents have told her to piece together what happened next.

Credibility of witness questioned in Young case

Young's defense has tried hard to discredit Calhoun. At the first trial, it pointed out she identified him from a photo showed to her by investigators - not a proper lineup.

This time around, questions have been raised about Calhoun's medical history. In a hearing Wednesday outside the presence of the jury, she testified she was hit by a delivery truck when she was 6-years-old that left her with brain trauma. She said she has drawn disability payments ever since.

Judge Stephens ruled the information was relevant and lawyers could bring it up before the jury.

Testimony brings new revelations in Young murder trial

Sargent, who didn't testify in the first trial, said Friday that Michelle Young was stressed and sought individual help on how to deal with the problems in her marriage.

"She was very anxious over the fact that she was pregnant and their marriage was in some real trouble," Sargent said.

Arguing between the couple had gotten so bad, Sargent said, that the two were able to communicate effectively only over email.

Jason Young live blog: Night clerk remembers unusual events at Hampton Inn

3:43 p.m.: Night clerk Keith Hicks from the Hampton Inn in Hillsville, Va., is on the stand. Hicks came to work around 11 p.m. that night and worked the overnight shift.

He testified that he saw a door on the west side propped open by a rock and kicked the rock out. He also said he noticed that the surveillance camera that watched that exit had been disconnected.

Within half an hour of it being re-connected, the camera had been pushed to where it was facing the ceiling tiles.

"It was very unusual," he told prosecutor Howard Cummings.

Later, when concluding his testimony, he said, when he saw the camera unplugged, "It gave me an uneasy feeling."

Under cross examination from defense attorney Bryan Collins, Hicks said there were 86 guest rooms in the inn that day, and that Jason Young didn't stand out to him.

"He didn't stand out from the other hundreds of guests that come through," he said.
