Authorities in Cozumel, Mexico, have stepped up their search efforts, hoping to locate a missing 66-year-old American passenger who disembarked from Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas on Wednesday afternoon and never returned.

*****
Edmond Bradley Solomon III, who suffers from dementia, was last seen at the SSA Pier in Cozumel wearing a white tank top, gray shorts, and dark glasses.

The Seguridad Ciudadana Cozumel (SCC), along with the Directorate of Public Security, the Secretary of the Navy, and the Civil Protection Cozumel, are spearheading a comprehensive search over land, sea, and air.

*****
Initial searches were carried out in and around Passion Island, a popular cruise ship excursion located on the northern end of the island, but proved fruitless. By Friday, the FBI had been called in to assist in the search efforts..

*****
She (his daughter) said he had no phone or wallet and that “he traded his watch for a taxi ride yesterday [Wednesday], and that is the last we know of him.”

Savannah Miller said her father Edmond Bradley Solomon III, 66, was recently diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, a type of degenerative disorder that affects a person’s behavior, rather than memory.

“He sometimes says odd things and behaves erratically — or oddly — because he’s just doing what he knows how to do,” Miller explained. “He can’t process the same way you or I can.”

*****
Solomon recently embarked on a Caribbean cruise with his wife, Mimi, and other family members. But, the trip soon took a distressing turn after he disappeared during one of their stops in Cozumel, Mexico.

*****
Local authorities said Solomon was last seen along the road of Isla de la Pasión in Cozumel on Wednesday evening. He was wearing a white t-shirt, grey shorts, and dark sunglasses.

The family has been in contact with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City and the U.S. Consulate.

In a statement to News 2, a spokesperson for the FBI Columbia field office said they are aware of the missing person report but cannot comment at this time. The agency referred questions to the State Department.

…The pair went to the terminal's restroom after the ship, the Icon of the Seas, was docked, but since then, Solomon has not been seen or heard from by his family.

'When my stepmom, Mimi, came out, he wasn’t there,' Solomon's daughter Savannah Miller told WCBD in an emotional interview.

'She thought he might still be in the bathroom so she waited for him for a few minutes. He didn’t come out.'

Despite a family member checking in on him, he was nowhere to be seen in the bathroom. At that point, Miller says, his family knew her father was 'lost.'

The only reported sighting of him came from a cab driver who said he was hailed by the missing American on the Isla de la Pasión road.

Municipal authorities say a taxi driver, responding to an alert about Solomon, said he was flagged down by the lost American around 2:30 pm, drove him to a road with beach access and was paid by Solomon with a wrist watch because he said he had no money, according to Mexico News Daily.

“Solomon grew up in West Ashley and has spent his professional career working as a critical care nurse at Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in downtown Charleston, according to Miller. He is also an avid surfer and fisherman, although they said his condition has limited his ability.

“He liked to be with the people that he loved…he was always making sure that we were safe and we were cared for no matter who it was,” Miller said. “He’s always been a fixer and someone who’s just drawn to helping other people.”

*****
“The search focused on the vicinity of Isla de la Pasión and all the beaches and businesses in the northern hotel zone were visited, without success,” a statement from the Civil Protection read.

*****
Local police said Solomon had a necklace with a GPS, which only works when within 33 feet of his wife’s phone....

*****
“The Public Security Directorate reported that Mr. Solomon was possibly wandering around the urban area.”

*****
Miller (his daughter) and her cousins spent Saturday searching the city with her family and were told of several possible sightings of her father throughout the day.

She was told her father could be staying hydrated and using the bathroom at local churches.

“He is lost and scared. He cannot show or process emotions like a healthy person would,” Miller said in a post on Facebook.

Cozumel isn't on the Mexican mainland, it's an island, so at least that narrows down the search range somewhat.
Although Cozumel is 22 miles long by 10 miles wide, so still a significant area.

But a week has passed, which is cause for concern. Surely someone would have seen him in that time?

I do wonder if he may have gone into the ocean?

I caregive for a senior with dementia. It’s a ton of work and you can’t let them out of your sight. It’s exhausting.

I feel bad for the family. This is so sad.
It doesn't sound like a cruise was the right place for someone with advanced dementia.

Even the cruise ship itself would be a huge and confusing place! He must have felt quite frightened by it all, plus calling into a different place every day as well.

Far from ideal.

Praying for a good outcome.

Interestingly, the Missing Persons of America group created a missing poster for Mr. Solomon which explains that the type of dementia he suffered from had little, if anything, to do with his memory, and affected his emotional responses and behavior.
It is shown in this news story: Search for missing South Carolina cruise passenger complicated by jungle terrain as family demands US help

More info on this from his daughter (this is from the article I linked above with my bolding added a relevant comment):

“"My dad walks really fast, and he does not have eyeglasses on like he usually does," Miller said in a previous interview. "He will often nod his head down and focus on the ground while walking. The more anxious he is feeling, the quicker he goes."

He "generally has a calm or apathetic attitude, and will probably refuse help if offered, especially from a stranger," she said, which worries her and family that this trait, coupled with his fast-paced walk, makes him seem confident he knows where he is going.

“But he is not," Miller said. "He is lost and scared. He cannot show or process emotions like a healthy person would. Unfamiliar people or situations are intimidating to him. He does not know how to respond and will avoid."
