The case continues to remind the community about domestic violence, according to Jennifer Fopma, director of SAFE Place, a Battle Creek shelter for victims of the crime. Fopma said victims of domestic violence like Lands are scared to stay in the relationship and afraid to leave.
When a woman leaves, her risk of being murdered increases by 75 percent, Fopma said, because the crime is one of control. This is not a private family matter, it is a crime. And its devastating if we let it continue in silence. This is a community issue. This case really highlights how difficult it is for a domestic victim to leave. It doesnt mean they shouldnt leave, but it is more difficult than people believe. Lets give Mary the voice she deserves and end domestic violence.
