New Buffalo, MI is on the border of Indiana, as well as about an hour drive from Illinois. She could be from anywhere, but in my opinion she's from one of these 3 states.

COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Along Interstate 196 south of South Haven, Covert Township Police were stymied by a pair of decades-long mysteries:

What were the identities of the two bodies found near the highway a decade apart? And, how did they get there?

The woman’s body, found in 1988, was nicknamed 196 Jane Doe, and now has a name thanks to the Michigan State Police genealogy project: Marcia Bateman, of Oklahoma City.

The man’s body, discovered in 1979, never got a nickname and remains nameless.

Police hope DNA from his remains will help identify him, too.

[...]

The two are among seven sets of remains state police from the Fifth District are trying to identify through the genealogy project.

Three of the unnamed remains were given up by Lake Michigan — a woman’s body that washed up in 1988 near New Buffalo, a man’s body found on the beach in Covert Township in 2010, a jawbone with teeth discovered near Saugatuck in 2014.

So far, that’s about all that is known about them.

“They’re likely a drowning that will have remains wash up on the shore on Lake Michigan on this side, and those depending on how long in the water, those can be very hard to ID,” state police Fifth District Commander Lt. Chuck Christensen said.

Police figure the jaw bone came from a man who was somewhere between 18 and 99 years old.

The woman was fully clothed — size 38 men’s jeans, running shorts, pantyhose.

  • middle-aged white woman
  • approximately 5 feet and 5 inches tall, weighed 175 pounds, with brown hair and eyes.
  • believe she was wearing a wig or braided extensions that had been pulled from her scalp.
  • wearing a pair of men's denim blue jeans with a wide double ring in a size 38, with a striped cloth belt. Under her jeans, she was wearing a pair of red, white, and blue shorts, full-length pantyhose, and black ankle boots with a zipper at the top.
  • found without a shirt
  • bra ... heavy-duty, sandy in color, and containing a clasp in the front.
  • no mention of whether socks or underwear were present.
  • previously undergone a hysterectomy ... no longer had her uterus, bilateral tubes, or ovaries.
  • a scar that stretches from her pelvis to her naval area.
  • teeth and mouth were in excellent condition.
  • likely never or drank alcohol excessively due to the lack of staining observed.
  • may have come from an economically well-off background based on the porcelain bridge replacing a front tooth. The doctor indicated this type of work was considered experimental at the time and was probably performed within the preceding five years of her death.

Why would she have been wearing shorts and jeans? To keep warm? It being early April when she was found would fit with that as she had likely been in the water weeks? Maybe longer? But probably since at least late March, and I'm assuming probably a little earlier. Even early April would fit with wearing shorts under jeans to keep warm, too of course.

NEW BUFFALO, Mich. (WOOD) — Police hope that someone may have more information about an unidentified woman whose body washed ashore in New Buffalo on Apr. 8, 1988. Though the body was found 35 years ago, it was exhumed in November 2021 and re-examined recently using new forensic methods.

I am Not able to get into this article below, Subscriber Exclusive, but do believe it pertains to this lady, and if so ... she is not a White female, but a Black female.

Can someone else get into the article and post?

Jane Doe found dead in Lake Michigan was Black, not white as police believed

BERRIEN COUNTY, MI – An unidentified body that washed ashore from Lake Michigan in 1988 was likely a Black woman, not white as police initially thought.

The woman’s body was found in Lake Michigan near New Buffalo on April 8, 1988. Michigan State Police exhumed her Nov. 9, 2021, so DNA could be connected for entry into police systems and used for forensic genetic genealogy.
