About 40 people showed up at 10 a.m. Saturday, splitting up into groups and working their way through the complex and beyond.

Conner’s mother, Tabitha Spann, traveled from Mesa, Ariz., where she lives, to take part in the effort, coordinated as a “search and rescue.”

“We are looking for her. We are looking for any signs of her,” Spann said. “She was last seen here.”

A single parent, Conner is a stay-at-home mother of two children, a boy, 11, and a 9-year-old girl. The children are safe with their grandfather in Mesa. Conner has struggled with drug dependency; she’s also been arrested for prostitution, Spann said.

“I’m staying strong for the kids,” a determined Spann said.

On Saturday several dogs, including two bloodhounds, smelled clothing of Conner’s brought to the site in a sack. All the dogs headed north toward a frozen, small lake adjacent to the apartments. Most of the dogs circled the lake; one bloodhound headed farther north to a nearby apartment complex then circled back.

One dog alerted to a discarded piece of purple clothing, Conner was last seen wearing purple. A dog keyed in on a particular unit in the complex and to a dumpster there. The information, and potential evidence, was passed on to police.

This is good. Hopefully if there was foul play, anyone involved will start feeling the pressure.

The Denver Police Department initially said Conner was last seen around 1 a.m. in the area of East 44th Avenue and Argonne Street in Green Valley Ranch. However, things have changed.

The Federal Heights Police Department took over the investigation in early March after it was discovered Conner was last seen in the area of 85th and Pecos.

Investigators say they're handling this case as a homicide based on the concerning nature of her disappearance and the amount of time she's been missing.

The Dock Ellis Foundation, a national organization that represents families of missing loved ones in the minority community, has stepped in to help find Conner.

"We would like law enforcement, or whoever needs to be involved, the attorney general's office, whoever needs to be involved, CBI, maybe they could push it in the media that she's still missing. That would help,” said Tanya Frazier, chief strategist officer with the Dock Ellis Foundation.

The interim chief for Federal Heights Police said the case is still classified as a missing person case; however, due to how long she's been missing, they're following the protocols of a homicide investigation "out of an abundance of caution" and in case foul play is discovered in the future.

"Miranda is a joyful spirit. She's always goofy, trying to have fun, cracking jokes," Spann said earlier. "She's a good mother and she cares about other people. So if she found a stranger on the side of the street, she would try to help. So I just ask that the community would do the same thing is help her get home to us."

... At the time of her disappearance, Miranda was living in Denver with a roommate. She has two children. Her mother, Tabitha Spann, told Dateline that she spoke with her daughter on Thursday, February 2. She said Miranda asked her for money to cover her rent, and Tabitha told Dateline that she sent her $300.

Tabitha said that during their conversation, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. On February 4, one of Miranda’s children called Tabitha and said that she hadn’t been home in two days. Tabitha called Miranda’s roommate, who confirmed that she hadn’t heard from her, either. Tabitha told Dateline that it’s unusual for her daughter to go days without reaching out. She said friends and family tried calling Miranda’s phone but got no response. According to Tabitha, Miranda’s roommate reported her missing the next day. The Denver Police Department initially investigated Miranda’s disappearance. According to a March 2023 release from their department, Miranda was last seen in the area of W. 85th Avenue and North Pecos Street in Federal Heights. In an email, the Denver police told Dateline that the Federal Heights Police Department is now handling the case. Federal Heights Deputy Chief of Police Bob Grado told Dateline that Miranda’s disappearance is an active investigation and therefore he could not comment further on the case. ...

“Just recently they did assign a new detective, so it’s feeling more promising. He’s listening and keeping in contact with us, but prior, it just felt like we weren’t getting anything,” Spann said.
