MN - 10 dead, 5 injured in Red Lake High School shooting, 21 March 2005

The death toll is now ten. Cass, I remember that one. I really tend to stay away from the crimes against kids, too horrid. This one is filled with unimaginable images already.

A high school student went on a shooting rampage on this Indian reservation Monday, killing his grandparents at their home and then five people at his school, "grinning and waving" as he fired, authorities and witnesses said. The gunman was later found shot to death.
~~Stately said the shooter had two handguns and a shotgun.
~"You could hear a girl saying, 'No, Jeff, quit, quit. Leave me alone. What are you doing?" Sondra Hegstrom told The Pioneer of Bemidji, using the name of the suspected shooter.

Ten Dead in Reservation Shootings, Eight at the High School
FBI Special Agent Paul McCabe says six people died at the high school, including a teacher, a security officer and four students, among them the suspected shooter. The murdered students, two boys and two girls, were all found in one room said McCabe.

At least 14 other people were injured, two of them critically. Those two later died, bringing the death toll at the school to eight.

I have to say I am surprised a school with only 300 kids has a secutity guard. maybe there is trouble there frequently?

Well, the school is on an Indian Reservation. There is a lot of violence and drugs on the reservations in MN and ND.

I live in the next county and this has been the topic of conversation all afternoon. Lots of gossip - nobody knows for sure if the student is in custody or if he killed himself. I'm getting ready to watch the news in a couple of minutes. If there's anything new, I'll post.

According to the local news, there are ten people dead, including the shooter and his grandparents.

The school apparently had two security guards, security cameras and a metal detector.

Then why weren't his guns detected? Did he come to school late in the day and catch everyone off guard? His demeanor sounds so much like the two at Columbine. Very sad no one can detect these disturbed kids; probably there were signs of trouble but were ignored.

Psychiatric care is very limited these days; insurance doesn't pay much, if there even is any insurance. Were the grandparents raising him?

Yakwoman, forgive my ignorance... so the school was on a reservation - so only native american kids went there? no white, black, chinese..etc?

Do the families who live on the reservation work in town and mix with the population or do they pretty well stay on the reservation?

Yakwoman, please keep us updated.

Ashley Morrison, another student, took refuge in a classroom. With the shooter banging on the door, she dialed her mother on her cell phone. Her mother, Wendy Morrison, said she could hear gunshots on the line.
"'Mom, he's trying to get in here and I'm scared,"' Ashley Morrison told her mother.

(video) The preliminary investigation indicated the suspect entered the school and killed the security officer. When the Red Lake police arrived, he exchanged gunfire with the cops before advancing further into the school.

Witnesses and authorities said the gunman went through the school, pointing his gun and grinning as he shot victims.

School officials said the security procedures in place helped prevent more deaths. One teacher said the gunman tried to break into her classroom, but she had already locked the door

(subs) The boy, identified by a law enforcement official, a school employee and two students as Jeff Weise, 17, apparently shot and killed his grandfather -- a Red Lake police officer -- and his grandfather's girlfriend before heading to the school in his grandfather's Red Lake squad car, sources said Monday night.
Floyd Jourdain Jr., Red Lake tribal chairman, said Monday was "without doubt, the darkest day in the history of our tribe."

Her son Cody, 15, had been shot in the hip but wasn't one of the 10 slain during the rampage Monday afternoon at Red Lake High School.
"I'm feeling so lucky right now that it wasn't worse for my son," she said. "But I really feel sorry for the other families and for the shooter's family."
Cody told his mother that a student in his class heard noises and recognized them as gunshots. But a disbelieving teacher said that it must have just been the janitors making noise, her son told her.
Then the shooter, Jeff Weise, targeted Cody and fired twice, the mother said.
The first missed and hit a clock, the second hit Cody in the hip.
"I don't know why he shot me, Mom," Cody told his mother from his hospital bed. "I get along with him."

I heard through the grapevine that the metal detectors weren't working. How sad is that?

It would be a Native Americans Only school. Yes, people on reservations go shopping in other towns and some even have jobs off the reservation. They do seem to keep more to themselves, but I think that is their culture. As far as the youth segment of reservation populations, there is an alarming rate of alcohol and drug abuse.

(video) Then, in a classroom nearby, he heard the gunman ask Graves' friend Ryan a question.
"He asked Ryan if he believed in God," Graves said. "And then he shot him."

Hi SAR. It was beleived to be Cassie Bernall. This has been disputed. It is also said that several students were asked this question... I personally don't think this question was ever asked, but that is my opinion...
However, this shooter might not have known that, and I am convinced he "learned" from that horrible horrible shooting. I am praying for these students and faculty, this reservation, and the victims of Columbine that will have to relive it yet once again...
I don't think this boy had a "list" like the Columbine shooters. I think it was random... Four students were shot in one room, and a student that was injured said he got along with the boy...

From 4/19/04:
By the way, I'm being blamed for a threat on the school I attend because someone said they were going to shoot up the school on 4/20, Hitlers birthday, and just because I claim being a National Socialist, guess whom they've pinned?
From 5/26/04:
But the school threat passed and I was cleared as a suspect, I’m glad for that. I don’t much care for jail, I’ve never been there and I don’t plan on it.
