Last Friday, March 15, there was an Amber Alert for a 3-year-old boy who was abducted by his mother in Red Lake, MN. Shortly after the alert was issued, it was canceled because he was "found safe." His thread on WS was deleted at that time -- a presumed happy ending. Here is the rest of the story.

MINNEAPOLIS — A Red Lake woman has been charged in connection to the Friday abduction of a 3-year-old boy, according to Todd County Attorney's Office.

Jennifer Stately, 35, was charged Monday with one count each of third-degree assault, child torture, child neglect and malicious punishment of a child. All charges are felonies.

Law enforcement noticed the child had scabs covering his face and entire body, with open sores covering 95% of his face. They also noted that he had a strong smell of body odor, as if he hadn’t been washed or changed in days.

Court records state that the boy’s blue T-shirt was also dirty with what appeared to be “skin cells and crumb-like material.” Officials say that he was not wearing socks, but had on moccasins that were too big for him.

The boy’s feet were also full of scabs which caused him to not want to stand up due to the pain, the complaint states.

He was brought to Long Prairie Hospital for further evaluation and revealed that he had multiple open sores and lesions. Court documents revealed that his larger teeth were rotten and that he could hardly eat or drink anything because of the pain.

The child was unable to chew a cheese stick and was instead given pudding and vanilla ice cream -- but could only eat small bites.

According to the charges, it also appeared the child hadn't been bathed or changed in days. He was treated by medical staff, but deputies were told the recovery would be a slow process. Hospital staff also told deputies the wounds on the child's body weren't all from a skin condition and may have potentially been caused by a burn.

According to officials, Ethan was given a snack, but could hardly chew it due to pain. Prosecutors said the boy told them his "face hurts," and later burst into tears explaining to his caregivers that his legs and feet were in pain and "itchy." Health providers reportedly treated the boy with medication for the pain and itchiness, while also treating him for anemia and potassium deficiency.

The complaint said hospital staff believed the wounds covering Ethan's body could potentially be the result of burns from either chemicals or a heat source.

how might it be connected - what am I missing? Assumed she is in custody and he is somewhere safe now, no?

Regardless, this is awful

ETA: I'm very tired today, I get why this might be connected after a more thoughtful re-read and look at the dates

I have a really bad feeling about the fire. It looks like there's a good chance it could be connected.

"It would be a very slow process for his healing," hospital staff said of the child, according to charges filed Monday in Todd County. Staff also concluded that the wounds were not a skin condition and could be from a burn caused by heat or chemicals.

A double-fatal house fire was also reported Friday in Red Lake. Little to no details have been released except for the two fatalities and that there's no ongoing threat to the public.

The Minneapolis FBI bureau is leading that investigation and also declined to provide further information on the time and location of the fire. Officials have yet to identify the deceased.

Officials would not say if the fatal house fire and Amber Alert are connected.

Records show that Stately is the mother of three young children: the toddler and two boys, ages 5 and 6.

Stately's home on Circle Pines Road is in Red Lake's Little Rock District, according to Red Lake Nation legal counsel Joe Plumer. That district is in the area of the house fire.

Red Lake fire and police departments are deferring all questions to the BCA and FBI.

meth lab fire maybe? would explain why little guy's wounds appear to be possible chemical burns? Poor sweet thing. I hope the fire is unrelated but the fact that no articles have broached the subject of where her other two children are or if they are safe with someone else bothers me greatly :(
MOO: Solid theory, @Tippy Lynn. Something inspired that Amber Alert, and thank heavens, because these child was very injured and ill - so glad he was recovered in time for healing.

I'm shocked!

LONG PRAIRIE, Minn. — The Todd County Attorney's Office dismissed all charges connected to an Amber Alert in northern Minnesota's Red Lake Tribal Nation last month.

Jennifer Stately, 35, was charged with four felony charges, including: third-degree assault of a victim under 4; child torture; malicious punishment of a child; and child neglect resulting in substantial harm.

The charges were dismissed Monday "In the interest of Justice," according to court documents.

When asked about the charges being dismissed, a spokesperson with the Todd County Attorney's Office replied, "our office has no further involvement in this matter and will not be providing any comments at this time. Thank you."

I'm assuming there will be more to follow.

Her attorney filed a motion to dismiss the charges, stating the alleged acts did not occur in Todd County and the court does not have jurisdiction in Red Lake under Public Law 280.

The federal law allows six states, including Minnesota, to have jurisdiction over criminal matters on Indian Reservations. However, the Red Lake Reservation is exempt from that federal law.

"Ms. Stately has a constitutional right, state and federal, to be tried before a jury from the county in which the acts are alleged to have occurred," the motion read.

It’s unknown whether any new charges will be filed in the case.

Federal charges for murder, arson and child neglect.

DULUTH, Minn. — A 35-year-old woman from Red Lake faces federal charges after the deaths of two small children on the Red Lake reservation earlier this year.

The U.S. Department of Justice charged Jennifer Marie Stately with murder, arson and child neglect for an incident on March 15, 2024, that also triggered an AMBER Alert.

According to court documents, officials allege that Stately attacked two children, referred to as Minor A and Minor B. Stately slashed at the children with a knife or other sharp object then set fire to the home. Minor A was fatally stabbed in the chest, officials said and while Minor B suffered non-fatal stab wounds, they died from smoke inhalation from the burning home.

Stately fled the scene with a third small child in her vehicle and an AMBER Alert was issued around 9 p.m. that night.
