NC NC - Denise Porch, 21, Charlotte, 31 July 1975

Both Denise Porch and this unidentified doe show dna available, but Denise is not listed as a rule out. The doe is listed with brown hair and Denise with blond. However, Denise's hair doesn't appear extremely light blond in the pictures to me and the doe has so little information so I'm not sure of the accuracy.

Midlands killer taunted victim's family in phone calls. This TV show tells the story

The slayings terrorized the Midlands until Bell was apprehended on June 27, 1985. He was convicted and sentenced to death in separate trials in 1986 and 1987, with the trials held in other counties because of concerns about finding impartial juries in the Midlands.

Bell was executed in October 1996, choosing to die by electric chair instead of lethal injection. He also was suspected, but never charged, in the 1984 disappearance of a Charlotte woman.

Details of Disappearance

Porch was last seen in Charlotte, North Carolina on July 31, 1975. She was employed as the manager of Yorktown Apartments on Tyvola Road at the time and also resided in the complex.

Porch was last seen during the afternoon hours as she showed a man around the property. She has never been seen again. There were no signs that a struggle had taken place inside her own apartment, and the air conditioning and television set were left on.

Porch left all of her personal belongings behind, including her Camaro and her purse. The only things missing were the keys to the vacant apartments in the complex, and a log of available units which she would show to prospective tenants.

Porch left a note for her husband saying she'd left to show an apartment to a prospective renter. She has never been seen again. An extensive search did not produce any clues as to her whereabouts.

Her family had her declared legally deceased in 1982, seven years after her disappearance. It is not believed that Porch left of her own accord; her family says she was happy with her life at the time of her disappearance and she had just celebrated her first wedding anniversary.

Larry Gene Bell emerged as a possible suspect in Porch's case in the mid-1980s. A photo of Bell is posted with this case summary. A former electrician, he lived on Cherrycrest Lane in 1975, approximately 300 yards from Yorktown Apartments.

Larry Bell, circa 1985

Bell was found guilty of the murders of two young women from South Carolina in 1985 and sentenced to death. He maintained his innocence in Porch's case and was never formally charged in connection with her disappearance. He is also the prime suspect in several other young women's disappearances and presumed murders in North Carolina.

Porch physically resembled Bell's other victims and authorities believe he was involved in her case. Bell was executed in 1996, although his lawyers attempted to reverse his death sentence by claiming he was mentally ill and believed he was Jesus Christ.

Another possible suspect, who tried to extort a $50,000 ransom from Porch's family after her disappearance, turned out to be an opportunist who had not been involved in her presumed abduction.

Porch was declared legally dead in 1982. Her disappearance remains unsolved and foul play is suspected in her case due to the circumstances involved. Her family says it is extremely uncharacteristic of her not to contact them.

He lived that close?? Definitely a red flag. Since he was an electrician perhaps he assisted the maintenance man at that apartment complex with electrical problems. Could've EASILY interacted with the missing female Denise Newsom Porch since she was the manager of the complex.
Maybe he flirted and fantasized and she rejected him. Prompting him to assert dominance in retaliation.
He should most DEFINITELY be a person of intense interest. In my opinion.
Do you know any of the OTHER addresses he lived at?
Seems this killer's victims weren't only the 2 in Columbia, S.C..
He would've been doing this for a while, very similar to BTK and the Green River Killer.

Denise has been missing for 47 years.
There are a number of possible scenarios and potential suspects to consider.

Another person that I think might be a possible victim of Larry Gene Bell is
Angela Gray Hamby.
Angela lived in Wilkesboro, NC.
Since Larry Gene Bell was familiar with the area, had lived in that area. The convenience of I-77 and highway 21 . She does fit his pattern. 5'4" blonde hair and blue eyes.
Looking at the suspect composite of Angela Gray Hamby's disappearance from witnesses description fits that of Larry Gene Bell
Comparison below.

Surely that trash of a former electrician kidnapped, raped and murdered this young woman... worker and wife... in the same way it is a risky job, you never know who will end up renting apartments or houses... I'm glad he was executed painfully but he never confessed or said where the body was...
either way
rest in peace Denise
