NC - Dorian Harper & Wanda Larson for abuse of foster child, Monroe, 2013

Looking hard for an update for this one. I googled Wanda Sue Larson and trial and keep getting search results that indicate her trial is set to begin Monday March 16, 2015 but can find no MSM article to verify it.

When I read the headline my first thought was "the kid killed the chicken" and sure enough that is what happened.

I have heard ignorant people talk about tying a dead chicken around a dog's neck to teach the dog to stop killing chickens, I think it is a really stupid idea. Apparently this guy heard about that method too, and tried it on a kid (at least the kid would presumably understand the point).

MONROE, N.C. — A North Carolina man pleaded guilty Wednesday to handcuffing an 11-year-old boy by his ankle to a porch with a dead chicken around his neck as punishment.

Authorities said they think Harper tied the dead chicken around the boy’s neck as punishment for killing one of the chickens on the 5-acre farm where they lived.

Dorian Harper entered the guilty plea to three felonies — child abuse, assault with a deadly weapon and maiming without malice. His plea came a day after a jury was seated.

no word on Larson and her trial or what is up with her prosecution.

This gives more detail from when it first happened. I live in Union County, and this caused a hell storm. Everyone kept saying if you can't trust a nurse and a DSS supervisor, who can you trust?

Sounds like the conditions were pretty bad, I guess they weren't undergoing any sort of inspections?

I have to think the people that end up like this never envisioned it in the beginning. They take in troubled kids thinking "they can handle it and turn the kids lives around" and they can't. The boundaries and common sense break down completely due to the frustration factor.

One has to wonder if money plays a large role in it too, though in this case the woman was working as an ER nurse so she likely made good money.

My dogs have killed a chicken and I can't blame them because they are dogs, but if a kid did something like that....oh lordy...they would have to be removed asap for their own safety.

Finally! I could not even understand how this ended up in a jury trial in the first place!

extremely disappointing result for the sentencing.

Union County’s division of social services has made substantial progress in addressing concerns about its operations that the state raised last year, a new report released Monday found.

But the report found that since November 2013, the child welfare staff had a 31 percent turnover among its 42 social workers and supervisors.

The report is the last that the county expects from the state tied to changes following Larson’s arrest.

"UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A teenager at the center of a child abuse case, when he was found chained to a porch with a dead chicken tied around his neck, is speaking out for the first time.

The boy was 11 years old in 2013 when deputies found him on the porch of his foster parents Wanda Sue Larson and Dorian Harper. At the time, Larson was a Department of Social Services supervisor for Union County and Harper was a nurse at Carolinas Medical Center - Union.

"I got really nervous and happy," the boy WBTV is calling "Michael" said when deputies stumbled across him on the porch. According to the Union County Sheriff's Office, a deputy was responding to an animal services complaint at a home along Austin Road when he saw the then 11-year-old boy outside.
