MCLEAN COUNTY, N.D. (KFYR) - Airplanes and a large group of volunteers helped comb through the back roads of McLean County on Friday searching for a missing 81-year-old Bismarck man.

*********
Lloyd Liken was last spotted on Friday, November 17, driving from Washburn to Wilton going south. Authorities ran his plates because he was driving slowly, but at that time he had not been reported missing.

*******
McCabe Methodist Church has become the headquarters for the search efforts.

******
From pavement to section lines, volunteers searching in McLean County wanted to cover everything possible. People drove from north of Underwood to places like White Shield and Max. Several planes were also in the air searching for Liken.

******
For those looking to help in the search efforts a Facebook page, ‘Looking for Lloyd Liken’ has been set up.

It was reported on Bismarck Police’s website that Law Enforcement had used a plane and personnel to look for Liken and his vehicle in rural areas around Bismarck and Mandan with no success. The Bismarck Police Department is asking landowners to check their land for Liken or his SUV and hunters to be on the lookout as well.

KFYR TV reported on November 21, 2023, that:

“Just a couple of weeks ago, Lloyd received a quilt of valor to honor his service in the Vietnam War. That ceremony was the last time his daughter Lisa saw him.

“We went to pick him up on Saturday night to take him out to dinner and then the symphony. And that’s how we figured out he was missing at that point,” said daughter Lisa Liken-Monroe

Lloyd Liken’s family says they’re not giving up hope of finding him.

“I cry, I get mad,” said Lloyd’s daughter Lisa. “There’s all the stages of grief that you go through.”

********
According to the family, Lloyd has been missing since he went to dinner at a friend’s home in Bismarck on the evening of November 16.

“He got confused,” Chad (son-in-law) stated. “It was dark. If anybody’s been up in that area, around Turnbow Lane, you can go any number of directions.”

********
In the last week, the Monroes have received help from Badlands Search and Rescue, as well as friends and volunteers, many of whom have spent days driving up and down gravel roads looking for anything strange.

*******
Chad and Lisa say Lloyd didn’t have a cell phone, and that so far, there’s been no activity on his bank accounts.

*******
“Could something pop up that he’s maybe down in Mobridge, South Dakota?” asked Chad. “Wow, that would be great, but we don’t know. We’re hoping. One way or another, we’d like to have an answer.”

A recent post by nonprofit organization Badlands Search and Rescue Service said that despite the collective efforts of those involved to search and canvas around Bismarck and the region, the time had come to scale back and shift its approach. The statement indicated the continued search would hone in on already canvassed areas in several counties.

Volunteers have been meeting at McCabe United Methodist Church in Bismarck, coordinating search efforts that have extended beyond Bismarck to as far south as Mott and Bowman. A meeting was held at Gate City Bank in Minot last week to organize a search of Ward County roadways, but search organizer Sonja Murray said they don’t have any plans for additional searches in the Minot area at this time as their efforts are scaled back.

Liken is not believed to have a phone. However, he does wear glasses and is blind in his right eye. He also has hearing impairment.

Chad noted the family is tracking all known bank accounts but said Lloyd could have other resources they don’t know about.

[...]

“Central North Dakota including all communities, roadways and rural areas is currently a focus of search efforts,” the flyer stated. “But all of North Dakota and surrounding states are asked to be aware and to be on the lookout.”

However, Chad and Lisa confirmed they have received leads outside of this target zone and the search has been moved to not just state-wide but into surrounding states like Montana, South Dakota and more.

[...]

As of Dec. 4, daily searches organized by the family have ceased as Lisa and Chad headed back to work. They will continue searching after work and on the weekends. However, many individual searches are still underway. Those wanting to volunteer to search can contact organizers on the Facebook page and see what areas and roads still need to be searched.

He'd have to be eating and resting somewhere if still alive.
Not to mention even w/o a phone he'd have someone call his fam. if he was just stranded by the road somewhere ?
Although Lloyd didn't have any medical condition that would lead one to think he became completely disorientated, he could easily have driven off a road and be stuck in his car.
Even a minor accident could be deadly at that age.
ND is cold at night, now !
So sorry for his family, this sounds bad ! :(

Volunteers have now searched over 15,000 miles, joining Badlands Search and Rescue.

Liken was not diagnosed, but showed signs of dementia.
“One of the factors with that is they go until they get stuck,” Bateman (Badlands S&R) said.

*******
Bateman and Chad and Lisa say they’re considering every possibility. Lloyd’s vehicle could be in an unharvested field, it could be underwater, or on private property. Now, the couple is in a reactive mode, waiting for a tip.

My mother doesn't have a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer's either, but she has it and my dad is taking care of her. She believes she is fine, never misses a step.

The area that Lloyd was found is quite hilly. It would not be that unusual if he got lost, went down a prairie road, got stuck, et cetera. Occupied farmsteads are few and far between.
He was found in the county in which I reside. This is very sad news.
