<<Investigators said Michael Miller, 22, was last seen hiking Mount Lafayette. He was reported missing on Oct. 23, 1983.

Miller separated from his friends at about 4:30 p.m. that day after he hiked ahead of them on the Old Bridle Path Trail, saying, "Meet me at the top of the mountain," according to The Doe Network.

His brother Tony said Michael Miller grew up in South Boston, then moved to Weymouth, Massachusetts, around 1975. He said at the time of his disappearance, he was a junior at MIT and lived on campus.

Michael Miller was last seen wearing a black leather jacket, tan sweater, blue jeans, hiking boots and a silver and black wristwatch, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. His brother said he had a 35mm camera with him.>>

Circumstances of Disappearance

Michael was last seen October 23, 1983, hiking on Mt. Lafayette, a 5249-foot mountain, with friends. Wearing jeans and a leather jacket, Michael became separated from his friends at about 4:30 p.m. after he hiked ahead of them on the Old Bridle Path Trail with the words, "Meet me at the top of the mountain." His friends waited for him at the trailhead but eventually left.

There was an unconfirmed sighting of Michael near Greenleaf Hut, an Appalachian Mountain Club cabin boarded up for the winter. The hut, about a mile from the summit, was much higher than searchers originally thought Michael may have climbed.

Searches by helicopters, Fish and Game officers, scent dogs, and climbers from the Mountain Rescue Service, were called off after a week because of below freezing temperatures and hurricane-force winds. No trace of Michael has ever been found.

<<Michael Miller was 23 in 1983, up with friends from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for an October weekend. On that particular Sunday, according to newspaper accounts, he shouted “See you at the summit” to a group of friends and departed up the Old Bridle Path on Mount Lafayette.

It was 3 p.m. on that day, far too late to consider summitting the 5,260-foot mountain. He wore jeans, boots and a leather jacket over a sweater.

A search that lasted nearly a week followed, in weather conditions that deteriorated, as they do rapidly in the approach to winter. On the last day, winds howled at hurricane force.>>
