On Monday, July 18, the body of Margarita Espinoza of Union City was discovered at the foot of a stairway beneath a porch of her 14th Street apartment building off of Summit Avenue.
"The incident took place Monday morning between 1 and 5 a.m., where a woman was assaulted," said Everett. "She was brutally beaten, sexually assaulted and killed."
According to the latest information released by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, after an autopsy of the body by the North Regional Medical Examiner in Newark, it had been discovered that Espinoza had been beaten and strangled.
Other injuries indicate that the victim had been sexually assaulted, although confirmation is pending forensic DNA analysis.
"Apparently the victim of this particular incident had a habit of picking up recyclables in the early morning hours, and it's possible she was doing this when she was attacked," said Everett.
Espinoza lived in the apartment building with her boyfriend, who at the time was recovering from a stroke at a Jersey City hospital.
Deputy Chief Joe Blaettler said that some physical evidence has been recovered and is undergoing analysis, but it could be a while for them to receive results.
