NV NV - Reno, BlkMale 25-35, UP2105, MVA, bank robbery suspect, abdominal surgical scar, Jul'80

Due to the suspicion that this UID was involved previously with the correctional system, I started looking for lists of wanted people and/or people who had escaped from jail or prison. So far, on a state basis these are the links that I have found (I also included DC and Canada) --

If anyone has this information for other states or better links (maybe that have more photos or go back longer), hopefully they could pass them on. I think [out of all of the people on these lists], the unidentified bank robber looks the most like Thomas Brooks from Virginia but I don't know if the circumstances are close enough to suggest it.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a list for California; I suspect that this UID was from the other side of the state line (maybe from Oakland/San Francisco or Sacramento?) and decided to rob a bank in an area where he was not known.

I was looking at the Virginia Department of Corrections web page of Wanted Escapees at http://vadoc.virginia.gov/offenders/wanted/escapees.shtm and noticed Thomas Brooks, whose vital statistics are very close to the unidentified bank robber. Prior to looking at both men at the same time, I thought that Thomas Brooks could be a possible match (taking into consideration that the unidentified man face was swollen/distorted from the accident that killed him. Maybe I am just tired.

Wow! This totally looks like him. I guess without fingerprints there is no way to tell for sure?

John Doe's Namus was recently updated
https://identifyus.org/cases/2105

Thomas Brooks is not a listed rule-out. But John Doe's dentals are available. Could Brooks' dentals be available from Virginia?

I noticed that his page was recently updated, too; since he is one of the 49 (used to be 50 before Holly Glenn was IDed) UIDs who I track on NamUs, I thought that I would receive an e-mail explaining what had been changed but I haven't. :( The primary difference that I see is that the part about the FBI losing the prints has been removed.

I was able to locate an article that originally appeared in the Virginian Pilot on May 23, 2009 about Thomas Brooks. The article explains that Thomas Brooks received a sentence of 20 years for his involvement in an armed robbery and murder in Newport News, VA in 1968. Two years later, he escaped from Nansemond Correctional Field Unit No. 3 in Isle of Wight County, VA. http://hamptonroads.com/2009/05/nearly-four-decades-later-no-sign-elusive-escapee

I emailed the Washoe County Coroner and the Virginia Department of Corrections about comparing the two, hopefully Virginia has Thomas Brooks' dental information.

I wonder if the detective who used to post on here could shed some light?

I haven't heard back from Washoe County about Thomas Brooks; I'm not sure if that is good, bad, or otherwise. There is another wanted man who reminds me of the unidentified bank robber who I noticed recently. Lawrence Calvin Pierce is wanted by the state of New Jersey for murder.

I can't make up my mind because both men's scars don't match up but I really do see a resemblance. So far, I haven't been able to locate any information about the murder Lawrence Pierce is accused of.

This seems solvable.

There was previous mention of Lawrence Verdell as a possible match, except at the time there was no photo of him available for comparison to the UID. There is now. I used the postmortem to compare, and I’m undecided. Lawrence looks to have a gap between his front two teeth and it’s hard to tell with the UID. Although it does look like there could be. In my opinion their noses look nothing alike.

Dwaun Thomas Cox (23) has certain features that resemble JD (imo), but he's two years younger than JD's estimated age range (25-35) and is 4" taller (DTC - 5'8"/JD - 5'4"). I wonder whether DTC's reported height is known via an official measurement (i.e., medical or incarceration records. etc.) or whether 5'8" is simply an estimated guess by whoever reported him missing. A 2-year age difference isn't a major setback for me so I'm not bothered too much over that point.

When I compare JD's PM photo with Dwaun's I wonder whether JD's nose is rounded because of all the swelling? If so, and if his nose wasn't swollen, would it be shaped similar to Dwaun's? The features that appear similar are the shapes of their eyebrows and the distance b/w them, the mustaches (especially under the nose), and their ear lobes. When I zoom in on their photos I see marks/scars/blemishes that seem to be in the same places on both, but with all the blurriness and "noise" on Dwaun's photo, it's hard to tell whether it's really there or I'm imagining things.:) I'm going to work on zooming in, cropping, and adding reference marks a little later today. I'll post those when I'm done.

WARNING: POST MORTEM PHOTO behind spoiler & at link.

Here's the zoomed, cropped, and marked photo I used for comparison. The green arrows show what appears to be a fold, indentation, or mark of some sort on the ear lobes. The blue arrows point to 3 distinct marks/moles. (Stop laughing at my awesome photo mapping skills!:p)

"The Sparks bank robbery suspect who was fatally injured while fleeing from police Wednesday remains unidentified, police said today. Police said before the robber fled with $1,654 from the American Savings & Loan Association, at 390 N. McCarran Blvd., he handed the teller a check on which he had written, '"I love you." Police chased a car from the area to the Patrick off-ramp, 11 miles east, where the car smashed through a guardrail to an underpass road 20 feet below. The driver was pronounced dead at Washoe Medical Center. Police today said they believe the man might be from the San Francisco Bay Area."
Reno Gazette-Journal, July 17 1980

That's certainly odd. "I love you."? Was there some connection between the teller and this doe? I'm kinda baffled.

I'm even more baffled after reading this other paper:
The note demanded that money be put into a bag. The robber displayed a pistol in his waistband, police said. He then fled with $1,654. An employee gave police a partial license number and a description of the man's car.
Reno Gazette-Journal, July 16 1980

So what is it? Did the note demand money be put into a bag or the confusing "I love you."?

Maybe it was actually 'IOU', which I guess they'd understand as a demand for money if he pulls a gun at that moment. Or just I love you is enough to get your attention to see the gun on him?
