Mount Pleasant community holds vigil for 11 women

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Vidah Saeed feels a connection with the women found dead inside of an Imperial Avenue home and their families.

Saeed said she has been raped. And like some of the families, she said she has not been heard by the authorities.

"There were a few times I didn't tell because the police and people stereotype you," she said Monday. "I was afraid, but I want to tell women tonight they don't have to be."

Janice Webb laid to rest in fourth funeral held for Imperial Avenue victims

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Family and friends said goodbye this morning to Janice Webb, who always wore a smile and would joke around with others so they could smile and laugh, too.

Webb's funeral, the fourth for women whose bodies were removed from a house on Imperial Avenue more than two weeks ago, was at St. Timothy Missionary Baptist Church on Carnegie Avenue.

The crowded church sang, clapped and cried during the hourlong memorial. The Rev. James Greenwood assured them that Webb is now in a better place.

Would some of the women found dead at Anthony Sowell's house have been spared if county prosecutor was on the 2008 case?

CLEVELAND, Ohio — If Anthony Sowell had been accused of attacking a woman anywhere in Cuyahoga County but Cleveland last December, would he have been locked up before five other women went missing and turned up dead at his home?

The answer, some say, is yes.

Sowell was never charged after Gladys Wade accused him of beating her in his home in Cleveland. She told The Plain Dealer that she ran to patrol officers, claiming that Sowell choked and beat her and ordered her to take off her clothes. She said she left blood in his home from a cut thumb during their struggle. Sowell was arrested, but he was released two days later without being charged.

Sowell's December 08 victim, who escaped, speaks:

http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/11/cleveland_woman_says_police_fa.html

Poor thing, so very sad. :( Not only was she attacked and traumatized by Sowell, she was re-traumatized by people not believing or helping her.

According to the victim:

"Wade said she shouted to people walking past Sowell's house but they ignored her. Then she ran into a nearby restaurant. They refused to call 9-1-1 and told her there was a payphone outside.

"I just started crying," she said. "I was in this circle screaming that this man attacked me and nobody would hear me."

Wade said when she flagged down the police car a few streets away, the officers acted fast.

"The police at that time took me very seriously. They could tell how upset I was. They even came to the hospital with me and stayed with me the whole time," Wade said. "

Kudos to those street police officers who did come to her aid...

The Cleveland LE passing the buck. This is a crying shame! Didn't they even look him up and find out he was a RSO? Very poor, Cleveland LE.

Is there someone to blame for what happened on Cleveland's Imperial Avenue?: Regina Brett

If we're all to blame for the actions of one serial killer, then I'm to blame, too.

But I struggle with that idea that we're all to blame.

When Amanda Berry went missing six years ago, I headed straight to her house. Her mother wasn't the tearful, tissue-dabbing, sad mom you see on TV.

She nearly bit my head off. Louwana Miller was gruff and tough and angry as hell. When I knocked on the door to her upstairs apartment on the West Side, she screamed at me not to leave the damn door open.

She smoked so much I couldn't breathe. She didn't act like the mother of a missing child, at least not the kind I'd seen on TV. I wrote about Amanda anyway. But after a few columns, it was hard to get people to care.

Why? I don't know.

Amanda was pretty and white. But she was 16, from a poor family with a gruff mom and no dad in sight. She quickly faded from the news.

Why? Teens disappear. They run away.

Louwana called me every few months. In our last conversation she demanded, "I want her on the news. She's faded away from the whole world. It just kills me. This is killing me." It finally did. Louwana died three years ago. She was 44.

Rape Crisis Center leader says victims need others to believe them

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The next time you hear about a rape, believe that person, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center Executive Director Megan O'Bryan said.

Related commentary: A plea to unknown victims: Call 216-339-9664 if you survived Imperial Avenue attack: Connie SchultzShe said a lot of women who are raped do not report the incident out of fear -- fear of not being believed, fear of their attacker and fear of the police.

Community advocates have said that if authorities had believed women who claimed they were raped by serial-killing suspect Anthony Sowell, he might have been caught earlier.

CLEVELAND(CBS/AP) Anthony Sowell's Cleveland "House of Horrors" is going back under the microscope this week as police investigating the discovery of 11 victims at the scene renewed digging at the property and an adjacent backyard Wednesday.

Investigators hauled out evidence bags as they pursued clues provided by an FBI high-tech sweep. The horrible stench around the sex offender's home returned as well.

Anthony Sowell not in court as lawyers hold first pretrial hearing
By Leila Atassi, The Plain Dealer
November 19, 2009, 11:24AM

The article also names the 11th victim, 25-year-old Leshanda Long, missing since August 2008. She leaves behind three children, 9, 7, and 5 years old.

Her skull was found in a bucket in Sowell's basement.

Careful. Leshanda was identified last Wed 11/11 and was the 10th victim to be identified. Yes, unfortunately, only her head was recovered.

The 11th victim has not yet been identified.

Cuyahoga deputies short-handed as they check on sex offenders

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cuyahoga County has the most sex offenders in Ohio, but only two full-time deputies regularly check on the 1,416 people considered the worst offenders.

Other large Ohio counties have fewer offenders than Cuyahoga's 3,300 but use more deputies to perform the state-mandated address verifications for Tier III offenders such as rapists. Franklin County uses five; Summit and Hamilton counties each use four.
