PA - Michael Mohn, 68, beheaded by son Justin Mohn, 32, killer posted online, Middletown Twp., January 30, 2024

The Pennsylvania man accused of decapitating his father legally purchased a firearm one day before the grisly slaying, officials said Friday.

The suspect had bought a gun in Bristol Township on Monday, Schorn added. She said Justin Mohn had no history of diagnosed mental health issues, and had recently surrendered a medical marijuana card, making him eligible to possess a weapon.

“There was nothing legally precluding him from purchasing that gun,” she said. “That also shows you the clear state of mind that he was in having planned what he ultimately carried out.”

Middletown Township Police Capt. Pete Feeney said the video in Pennsylvania was posted at about 10 p.m. Tuesday and online for about five hours, a time lag that raises questions about whether social media platforms are delivering on moderation practices that might be needed more than ever amid wars in Gaza and Ukraine, and an extremely contentious presidential election in the U.S.

“It’s another example of the blatant failure of these companies to protect us,” said Alix Fraser, director of the Council for Responsible Social Media at the nonprofit advocacy organization Issue One. “We can’t trust them to grade their own homework.”

A spokesperson for YouTube said the company removed the video, deleted Mohn’s channel and was tracking and removing any re-uploads that might pop up. The video-sharing site says it uses a combination of artificial intelligence and human moderators to monitor its platform, but did not respond to questions about how the video was caught or why it wasn't done sooner.

Some recap from this article posted by @JDG:

Fort Indiantown Gap police found the suspect trespassing inside the military installation after scaling a barbed-wire fence, according to Bucks County District Attorney Jennifer Schorn. He had a loaded firearm that was missing one round and was taken into custody without incident, she said.

"The defendant stated he went to Fort Indiantown Gap in an effort to mobilize the PA National Guard to raise arms against the federal government," Schorn said.

Now charged with terrorism.
Justin Mohn, 32, had previously been charged with first-degree murder, possession of an instrument of crime and abuse of corpse in connection with the death of his father Michael Mohn back on Jan. 30.

The Bucks County District Attorney’s office says additional charges were filed against Justin Mohn on Thursday morning, including three counts of terrorism, two additional counts of possession of an instrument of crime as well as one count of robbery and several theft and threat related offenses.

Justin Mohn on Thursday was charged with three counts of terrorism as well as possession of an instrument of crime, robbery, theft, defiant trespassing and other related offenses, the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office announced. He’d previously been charged with several counts — among them first-degree murder — in connection with the slaying of his father, Michael Mohn.

Authorities discovered the elder Mohn, an Army Corps of Engineers employee, dead on Jan. 30 inside the Levittown home where he lived with his wife and son. According to a probable cause affidavit, officers found his plastic-wrapped head inside a large pot while the rest of his remains were located in a bloody bathroom on the first floor.

Manuel Gamiz, director of communications for the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office, said that Mohn's defense team requested the continuance.
