avid and Rebecca Stahl were married in 2009, but police reports dating to four years before their wedding detail a violent, tumultuous relationship.

It ended with 37-year-old Rebecca Stahl's body dumped in a field that once served as a nursery offering a distinctive hedge, a rarity that ultimately led investigators to discover her remains.

This morning, the homicide trial for her husband, David Stahl, 43, of Hempfield, will begin before Westmoreland County Judge Rita Hathaway.

In the prosecution's opening argument, District Attorney John Peck said there was no question that it was Stahl who killed his wife in February 2012 after the two argued about his drinking.

Defense attorneys did not dispute that Stahl killed his wife, but they said the jury must decide if it was intentional and should consider lesser charges such as third-degree murder or voluntary manslaughter.

“Do you know where your wife's at?” Buford asked.

“No,” Stahl responded.

The interview came after police found Rebecca Stahl's effects hidden in the freezer.

Tpr. Brian Kendgia testified it appeared some of the items had been burned, including the identification card for Derry Area School District, where she worked as a middle school math teacher.

Men's clothing and work boots were stashed in the freezer, along with leaves from a shrub that matched the plants near where the victim's body had been dumped, according to police.

Also on day three of testimony, forensic pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht testified Rebecca Stahl had multiple bruises and cuts all over her body, and that she suffered severe hemorrhaging from being manually strangled.

"When you have the hyoid bone broken, as you do in this case, and you have multiple hemorrhages on both sides of the neck, both higher up and lower down, and hemorrhages around the voice box area, larynx, then a substantial amount of force must be considered to have been applied," Wecht said.

The family of a woman murdered by her husband says they hope her legacy is one that will continue to inspire and help those who knew her.

Rebecca Stahl's brother, Tom Anderson, said Monday his parents are continuing to heal following Friday's verdict where an all-female jury convicted Rebecca Stahl's husband, David Stahl, of first-degree murder. He will spend life in prison without parole.

"My parents have and are having a really hard time with all of this," Anderson said. "They're very sad. After you go through the adrenaline and all the feelings of anger and sadness that come with just the horrible things they had to see."

Jurors who last month convicted a Hempfield man of strangling his wife did so even though the prosecution failed to prove he had sufficient time to form an intent to kill, a defense attorney claimed in court documents filed Tuesday.

The lawyer for David Stahl filed an appeal of his first-degree murder conviction, claiming evidence presented during the weeklong trial did not support the conviction.
