Russia-Ukraine war at a glance: what we know on day 592 of the invasion

  • Four people including a nine-year-old girl have been injured in a rocket strike on Konstantinivka on Sunday morning, according to the acting governor of Donetsk.
  • A 27-year-old woman and her nine-month-old baby are among those wounded in a Russian attack on the Kherson region in southern Ukraine, according to its governor, Oleksandr Prokudin. The woman and the infant were hospitalised with moderate wounds, he said, adding that a 33-year-old Red Cross medic was also wounded. Several houses and gas pipelines were damaged in the attack.
  • UN and local investigators are searching for answers in the village of Hroza in Kharkiv following one of the deadliest air strikes of the war. The strike on Thursday turned the sole cafe and store in the village to rubble and killed nearly 52 people gathered for a dead soldier’s wake, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other top officials in Kyiv. Only six people in the cafe survived.
  • Ukraine’s armed forces report that about 580 Russian troops have been killed during fighting over the last day. Posting its latest overnight summary of casualties, the Ukrainian military claims Russia has suffered 282,280 losses since the start of the war on 24 February last year. The figures have not been independently verified and are still being updated.
  • Poland’s president, Andrzej Duda, says that current violence between Hamas and Israel is useful for Russia in diverting the world’s attention and works in their favour. Duda argued in an interview with private broadcaster Polsat News on Sunday that conflict in the Middle East distracts international scrutiny away from Moscow’s aggression in Ukraine and may result in new migration pressures on Europe.
  • Volodymyr Zelenskiy has spoken about the situation in Israel, drawing parallels with the war in Ukraine by stating that “Israel’s right to self-defence is unquestionable”. He said his government had set up an operational headquarters to aid any Ukrainians in Israel. Officials have estimated that about 15,000 Ukrainian refugees have fled to Israel. While having sent tons of humanitarian aid, Netanyahu has consistently refused to supply weapons to Kyiv.
  • A United Russia party official in the Russian-held town of Nova Kakhovka in the Kherson oblast was killed in a car explosion on Saturday, the Russian-installed regional governor said. Vladimir Malov, executive secretary of the town branch of Russia’s governing United Russia party, died in hospital, Vladimir Saldo said in a post on his Telegram channel. Kyiv has not claimed responsibility.
  • Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s former leader, has called for a civil war in the US, as he said a civil war would be the only thing that could stop “America’s manic passion for sparking conflicts everywhere on the planet”.
  • Train traffic between North Korea and Russia has dramatically increased after the recent summit between leaders Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin, indicating a “likely” transfer of arms, according to a new report by Washington-based analysts. High-resolution satellite imagery reveals at least 70 freight cars at North Korea’s border Tumangang rail facility, the Beyond Parallel group said on Friday, a number described as “unprecedented”.

Ukrainian officials reported intense combat as Russian forces relentlessly assaulted the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka for a fifth consecutive day Saturday.

City leader Vitalii Barabash reported that Moscow was deploying additional forces to encircle the strategically important city in the eastern Donetsk region, situated just north of the Russian-held regional capital, also called Donetsk.

[...]

Barabash’s comments came after Russia’s U.N. ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, told a U.N. Security Council meeting on Friday that the intensified attacks in the east amounted to a new stage in Moscow’s campaign in Ukraine.

“Russian troops have, for several days now, switched over to active combat action practically throughout the entire front line. … The so-called Ukrainian counteroffensive can therefore be considered finished,” he said.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this week that Ukrainian forces were keeping Russian troops at bay and “holding our ground.”

Biden says US can support both Israel and Ukraine: "We have the capacity to do this and we have an obligation"

President Joe Biden said the US can provide support to Israel and Ukraine while still maintaining, “our overall international defense,” in an interview excerpt aired Sunday morning.

“We have the capacity to do this and we have an obligation to, we are the essential nation,” Biden said on CBS News, paraphrasing a famous quote from former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

“We're the United States of America for God's sake, the most powerful nation in the history — not in the world, in the history of the world. The history of the world. We can take care of both of these and still maintain our overall international defense,” Biden said, when asked if the US could take on both wars at the same time. “And if we don't, who does?” the president noted.

A pillar of Biden’s presidency has been to reassert America’s global leadership, which is supported, the White House argues, by the president’s lifetime of experience and worldview, and which his allies said will guide his next steps through remarkably uneven geopolitical crosscurrents of aid for Israel, funding for Ukraine and relations with Iran, CNN previously reported.

The full interview airs on CBS "60 Minutes" tonight.

My greatest fear is that China will use this to take advantage of the situation.

They know the US is involved with two major conflicts in both the Ukraine and in Israel. Both US dollars and US Military Assets. Add to that we have a such tragic divide within our own US leadership. The people, we ourselves, have elected to lead our own Government. IMO, we need to elect people that intend to unite rather than divide.

Both US dollars/Military Assets and indirectly our military personnel are very involved in helping the Ukraine defend their own country, which I support.

The US has sent at least two Atlantic fleet ships to the coast of Israel, which I support. IMO, they are there to deter Iran from getting involved.

Any potential conflict between China and Taiwan would involve Pacific based US ships, the US has a full fleet to deploy if needed.

My prayer for the World is that calmer heads will prevail.

Weeks before surrendering, Russia’s Security Service (FSB) conscripted Kalashnikov, a Ukrainian student, into the Russian army for publishing photos of a bridge used for Russian military logistics in his hometown of Novoazovsk in Donetsk Oblast, a town under Moscow’s control since 2014.

Once deployed to the front line in December 2022, Kalashnikov contacted the “I want to live” hotline set up by the Ukrainian government to allow Russian and forcibly conscripted Ukrainian troops to surrender. Unable to call the hotline, he came up with another escape plan.

“I’ve never planned to fight against Ukraine. This is my country. When I got into this, I already had a plan to surrender and proof of my innocence,” Kalashnikov told the Kyiv Independent during the press conference.

Following an investigation, Kalashnikov now claims a Ukrainian court has dropped all charges against him. Still a prisoner of war camp in western Ukraine, it is unclear when he will be set free.

Russia blames Ukraine for antisemitic riot at airport in Dagestan

Foreign ministry says Kyiv played ‘direct and key role’ after mob stormed planes in search of Israeli passengers

Russia has blamed Ukraine for the antisemitic riot in the mostly Muslim region of Dagestan on Sunday in which an angry mob stormed the airport in Makhachkala in search of Jewish passengers arriving from Israel.

Maria Zakharova, the Russian foreign ministry spokesperson, said on Monday that the riot was the result of a “provocation” orchestrated from outside Russia, with Ukraine playing a “direct and key role”.

Earlier in the day, Dmitry Peskov, president Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, claimed that the unrest was “the result of external intervention, including external information influence”.

Neither Zakharova or Peskov provided evidence to support their claims of outside interference.

Russian officials and state-affiliated media criticised Telegram channels – specifically one called Utro Dagestan, which has more than 65,000 subscribers – for their role in organising the rioters on Sunday. In doing so, many sought to argue that the riots were inspired by foreign “enemies” and were not an expression of homegrown antisemitism in Dagestan.

RT, a state-funded news agency that coordinates its coverage with Kremlin officials, released a report on Utro Dagestan on Monday, claiming that the channel’s anonymous administrator, who it said had been detained in Makhachkala, was linked to Ilya Ponomarev, a Kyiv-based former Russian official who opposes the Kremlin. Ponomarev said on Sunday that he had had no control over the channel for more than a year.

Late on Monday, Telegram said it had decided to ban Utro Dagestan for “inciting violence”.

Thousands of users in southern Russia reported outages on Telegram on Sunday, in particular in regions neighbouring the North Caucasus like Krasnodar and Rostov.

Oleg Matveychev, the deputy head of a Russian State Duma committee on information policy and IT, pushed back against reports of a broad ban on Telegram, but said it was possible that law enforcement would specifically target channels promoting the riots.

“President Putin is not giving up on his aspirations to take all of Ukraine and as long as Russia continues its brutal assault we have to continue to support the Ukrainian people and their self defense, because his intentions are clear,” Kirby said. Putin ”basically said that if Western weapons to Ukraine stop, Ukraine would have a week to live. So to ensure that we can continue to do that it’s critical that Congress step up and pass the supplemental requests that the president put forward last week.”

Kirby did not provide any details on how many Russian troops have been executed for failing to follow orders or any specific examples of units threatened with execution for retreating from Ukrainian fire.

The Wagner Group military contractor was reported to have had a practice of executing those who fled. The contract soldiers were pulled out of Ukraine after their leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, mounted an armed rebellion in June. There also have been reports, including from the British Defense Ministry, that the regular Russian military has deployed “barrier troops” that threaten to shoot any deserters.

“They are in such desperate need to make some kind of progress, particularly in the Donbas, the Donetsk areas, that they are literally throwing young men into the fight who haven’t been properly trained, haven’t been properly equipped, and certainly are not being properly led,” Kirby said.

U.N investigators on Tuesday urged Russia to acknowledge responsibility for a missile strike on a Ukrainian village that killed 59 civilians, conduct a transparent investigation into what happened, provide reparations for victims and hold those responsible to account.

The strike on a cafe in the village of Hroza on Oct. 5 was one of the deadliest strikes since the Kremlin’s forces launched a full-scale invasion 20 months ago. Whole families perished while attending a wake for a local soldier who died fighting Russian troops. The blast killed 36 women, 22 men and an 8-year-old boy. Numerous bodies were found torn to pieces, and it took nearly a week to identify all the dead.

The U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine said in a report published Tuesday it “has reasonable grounds to believe” that a Russian Iskander missile — a short-range precision-guided ballistic weapon — probably caused the blast in Hroza.
