Surely the meant plight
I think the word "flight" here refers to her leaving rather than being on a plane. Similar to "she took flight".
It's strange word choice though. It's as if they've copied an article in another language and translated it?

I think they should have used the word "run" not flight.
Maybe it is an AI copied source and the AI doesn't understand.

imo

"She was going for more and more runs and she went for the run and that's the last we've heard," Ms Murphy's friend and former neighbour Bianca Card said.

"All I know is that she was due to come back for brunch, and [her husband] Mick has called Sam and her phone was off and her phone's never off. So after that, he put out the alert."

There was a point in the Under Investigation report that jumped out for me as possibly a message for the perp (or more generally for viewers when they most likely know a lot more than can be revealed).

At around 33:08, the former detective asks the digital data specialist: if LE have had the data for 18 days why has it taken so long to search that area. The digital data specialist replies “that is a really good question”. His response is “maybe they wanted to see if the perps went back to that spot”. The former detective replies “good answer” in what to me seemed quite a pointed and ‘knowing’ kind of way.

Maybe nothing to it but it really stood out for me and I wondered if it was a message of any kind

IMO the police also may use " tower dumps" to corroborate info they already may have. It could also be used to eliminate people too I think IMO

I also think they have to have very certain time frames ( 1 - 2 hrs I think )

Found this recent article, that states, that Australian law enforcement agencies will get access to data from US-based companies such as Microsoft or Meta (formerly Facebook) – a process that could previously take months because it required both governments to approve requests.

The information sought could include much-needed files uploaded to a storage or backup service, emails and chat history, geolocation data, IP addresses and the identities of those sending messages.

Interesting...i don't think i've heard that before or i'm just not remembering

would victoria police have access to satellite data? couldnt they just use that and zoom into the suspect locations on feb 4 ?
just googled this and dont think its available for use yet, just in the movies!

Also if this is true and I've got the timeline slightly correct..the pinging must have happened 'early' as her phone was off when he called.

Her flight?! Gee my friend had a dream after Sam went missing (we both follow the case her having grown up in Mt Clear and me in another searched suburb) that I changed identity and flew overseas. It couldn't be a real possibility, or could it?! Strange wording ..
I do worry that the perps may be a flight risk.

Surely the meant plight

Its an idiom

to take flight
by definition: to run away or leave a place
- The burglars took flight when the alarm sounded.
- Startled, the herd of deer took flight.
- In dangerous situations, many people freeze, fight, or take flight.
- The startled birds took flight.
None of the above actually mean to travel in a plane. Its an expression whose meaning is more in line with: to run away, flee, make a run for it, be gone, to leave a place as quick as one can. This idiom probably originating, possibly from watching birds take flight [literally, with wings]

Nothing to add really, a friend spoke who stated how kind Sam and her husband were/are, and that 'she just doesn't want anyone to forget about Sam.'
I watched too. Are there any tech wizards out there who would know how to get the 7.30 report from tonight off ABCiview and load it in a way that our overseas members can watch? I have no idea how to do that ... being a luddite.
Sam's friend in the story said words to the effect "Sam would do anything for anyone. Please don't forget Sam".

Can't help with the video, but this article has a few paragraphs on what Sam's friend said :

"Detectives are now ready to trace mobile data from the Ballarat area,
with particular interest in phones ‘pinging’ from towers covering the area they believe Ms Murphy was in hours after her flight".

Does that mean - they have data from her watch?? - suggesting movement hours after she left Mt Clear heading towards the Ballarat area? (is that more general Ballarat - away from bushland?) JMO

Something happened to Samantha at Mt Clear

She would have to be taken in a large vehicle, possible 4WD, as she didn't walk out of there

Hopefully the police can get a GPS Tracking System on the vehicle

Tracing the GPS tracker to its owner might be possible through electronic means, such as checking devices' serial numbers or contacting the manufacturer of the monitoring systems

If they find the vehicle, that would be huge in the investigation

It could be stolen, so any 4WD s that have gone missing over the last four weeks, would be checked
and any that have been brought in to the workshop to be repaired, modified etc as well

I think this has been planned for a while and possibly the perpetrators have even done a training run/ dummy run on this scenario, it's been organised, very precise and quick and Mt Clear was going to be their place of ambush, they would have known where they were heading after

Someone knew what path Samantha would be running on, what time she was heading out, what time at Mt Clear she would arrive, as they wouldn't want to be hanging around there for too long and be seen

Samantha's last ping was in Buninyong 6kms from Mt Chance by road and supposedly 10 hours after she left for her run
The police will not confirm the time ( I don't think the ping was at 5pm )

She could have been taken to any farms around that area

The police would also look into any people of interest that live in that area, look at the phone calls,

and in phones that 'pinged' from towers covering the zone they believe Samantha was in hours after her run.

There was someone on fb who reckon she saw her in Hawaii. This article won’t help.

Yes, but Sam did none of those things. She didn't take flight. Which was the point of people wondering why the heck the NY article said flight. All she did was go for a run.

The sentence under discussion said ..... "Detectives are now ready to trace mobile data from the Ballarat area,
