A really sad story.
A search operation is under way after a two-year-old boy fell into the River Soar in Leicester on Sunday evening.

Emergency services attended the scene in Aylestone Meadows, close to Marsden Lane, just after 5pm.

The child was with his family when the incident occurred but was not located "despite the best efforts of those at the scene", Leicestershire Police said.

Police operation ongoing after child falls in River Soar, Leicester

Earlier this evening (Sunday 18 February) officers were called to the River Soar in Leicester after reports of a child falling into the water.

The child, a 2-year-old boy, was with family when he fell into the river, sadly despite the best efforts of those at the scene at the time the child was not located.

Emergency services attended the scene just after 5pm and a search and rescue operation began in Aylestone Meadows, close to Marsden Lane.

A man was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

The operation is ongoing and will continue with additional specialist teams in the morning.

The child’s family are being supported by specialist officers and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.

We have had a number of offers of support to assist with the search and would kindly ask that people do not attend the scene due to rising water levels and safety risks.

If anyone has any information or comes across anything that may assist officers, they are asked to contact us immediately.

Specialist teams are on standby to respond to any information received.
If you need to get in touch, please contact 999 quoting incident 476:180224.

Just heard about this on the news

How tragic - I hope they find his body soon as tragically this has no chance of a happy ending.

How does a family even begin to recover from losing their baby in this way - my heart breaks for them

Specialist diving teams continue search for missing two-year-old boy

Published:13:48 19/02/2024

Specialist police diving teams are continuing to search the River Soar today (Monday) following a report received yesterday evening that a two-year-old boy had fallen into the water.

Police had been called to the Aylestone Meadows area, close to Marsden Lane, at around 5pm yesterday evening (Sunday).

The boy had been out with family when he had fallen into the water. Despite the best efforts of people at the scene at the time, the boy was not located.

A man was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure and has since been discharged.

Specialist teams were deployed to the area yesterday evening (Sunday), including Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, and continued in their efforts to locate the child.

That operation continued overnight with force units using night vision goggles searching the area. The National Police Air Service (NPAS) and drone unit also supported officers on the ground.

Today, specialist diving teams from Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire are supporting Leicestershire officers as the search continues at the scene. Police dogs are also assisting at the scene.

Specialist officers continue to support the boy’s family and our thoughts continue to remain with them at this extremely difficult time.

We continue to receive a number of offers of support to assist with the search. We are extremely grateful for these offers but do ask for safety reasons that people do not attend the scene due to the rising water levels.

Assistant Chief Constable Michaela Kerr is leading the police operation. She said:

“Firstly our thoughts are very much with the little boy’s family at this extremely difficult and heartbreaking time. It is unimaginable to know what they must be going through.

“As soon as the report was received yesterday, officers and other emergency services were deployed to the scene. Searches commenced immediately and continued throughout the night.

“Rising water levels made the searches difficult, however we used the resources available to us including NPAS to try and locate the boy.

“This morning additional specialist teams including dive teams from Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Police are being deployed to the scene.

“We do please continue to ask members of the public to not carry out their own searches, due to the dangerous water levels at the scene.

“If anyone has any information or comes across anything that may assist officers, they are asked to contact us immediately.

“Thank you to all our officers and specialist teams who continue to work extremely hard at the scene in what are very difficult circumstance for everyone involved. Thank you also to you, the members of the public, for your ongoing support and co-operation. It is very much appreciated.”

Anyone with any information should contact 999 quoting incident 476:180224.

A two-year-old boy reported to have fallen into the River Soar has today been named as Xielo Maruziva.

A search has been ongoing in the area since Sunday afternoon (18 February) after Xielo was reported to have fallen into the water at the Aylestone Meadows area, near to Marsden Lane.

Xielo’s family have today described their son as a “cheeky, funny” boy who is “a bundle of joy”. They have also thanked members of the community for their ongoing support.

Xielo’s mother said:

“Xielo is a cheeky, funny, friendly, smart, caring and independent little boy. He never fails to make me laugh or smile and always loves a cuddle and some kisses.

“Xielo loves playing with his toys and watching cartoons including Bino and Fino.

“Me, his dad and the whole family are so heartbroken at what has happened. We thank everyone who has supported us and helped us during this time. We are extremely grateful for this.

“All we want is for Xielo to be found as soon as possible. Thank you.”

Xielo’s father added:

“Xielo is a bundle of joy to us.

“He is a charming and creative little boy and has just started at nursery. He loves cuddles, playing with his toys and going to the park.

“As a family we have been completely devastated over the past few days as the search for Xielo continues. It is hard to describe the pain and suffering we are going through.

“We would like to thank the search teams at the scene. We would also like to thank members of the public for all of your support. It is your prayers which are keeping us strong.

“We kindly ask that people wait for updates through the authorities in relation to the search as we continue to be overwhelmed with enquiries and messages at this time.

“Thank you all for your ongoing love and support.”
