The most notorious unsolved crime in your area

I am glad that at least two of these cases have been solved or come to resolution recently. Lets hope that with time and advancements in science or people talking that more of the cases are solved.

I read a book about this one and it still puzzles me to this day. I read the book a while back, but from what I recall, investigators claim they found shoeprints on the toilet seat in the bathroom (in the back of the shop) so maybe the perpetrators climbed in from outside (like from the roof) as the girls were closing up the shop?

the most notorious unsolved murder from my area in IL is the Lauterbach ax murder and attacks.

Someone once posted about the building where the attack took place being demolished some years back but I don't think there has ever been a case discussion here at WS

It's really awful when they can't find the culprit. There are so many nuances to each crime that it is unlikely to be described in one article.

For Nevada: The most famous is the unsolved murder of Tupac Shakur in 1996.

I would also add the disappearances of Sandra Butler(Sparks,1978) and Rebecca Dunn (Las Vegas,1979). It is now believed that Sandra Butler may have been a victim of the serial killers/rapists Gerald and Charlene Gallegos. They selected victims from county fairs, among other places. Gerald is now dead; she is living somewhere in CA under an assumed name after being paroled from prison for other crimes/murders once she testified against him.

Case from the city where I grew up. This area, especially the Boston Mountains in Arkansas just south of us, is full of remote caves and sinkholes where a body could permanently disappear just about anywhere. Stacy McCall was especially attractive, so I wonder if she was trafficked for money or drugs only to succumb who knows where.

I am going with D.B. Cooper for Washington.

The murder of 18 year old Julie Barnyock in November of 1993 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania.

At 11:40pm on Nov 8, 1993 Julie Barnyock stepped off a train at lansdale station from South Street in philadelphia. She used a payphone to call her parents in Chalfont for a ride home, but when her father arrived 20 min later she was nowhere to be found. Her father reported her missing, but on December 2nd someone found her body while cutting through a freight yard. Passengers from the train told police julie was seen speaking to a man on the train who looked to be in his 20's.

Police offering $10,000 for information that can help solve this case.

Being from the Philly area and fondly remembering South Street in all its eccentric 90s glory, I remember Julie's case well, now almost 30 years ago. Some feel that Arthur Bomar (an already-convicted SK who would later go on to murder Aimee Willard) was responsible, as he worked in Doylestown Hospital at the time, but no one has been able to prove it.
We have nothing else on her here, but she has been in my signature ever since I first created one a couple of months after I joined (when Beth Capaldi, also from the area, went missing and was later found murdered).

Replying to my own post, I just changed that:

Texas is also famous. If I had to choose one case I'd do The Fort Worth Trio (hate that name). I was thinking about it , and IF my suspicions are correct (just a guess), the case is a microcosm of everything that goes wrong with the human race, not only criminals but other people that are (apparently) not guilty of anything. But, again, it is just a guess...

(edited to add respectfully snipped for focus) Agree, agree, agree some more! Very true, @ex-stat, and there have been some amazing incidences of that recently--GSK for one; Rader for another.

One problem IMO, though, is that LE does not have enough resources to work on all these past cases. North Carolina, up to nine months is what this source says; source New Wake DNA lab could cut wait times for results from months to hours, officials say. Another story on the backlog is at As NC's decades-old rape kits are tested, new DNA evidence emerges

Here (a couple of miles from the Raleigh NC DNA lab, where an employee was caught by DNA) many people demand better schools and roads and fire and police response times and faster DNA testing. And then they get angry and yell that we need to lower our tax rates--the taxes needed to provide those services. I suppose it's just human nature to react that way.

TUPAC--another one that is now SOLVED!!

I will be very careful here, since not registered as a professional in the area in this forum (yet).

So, I have two possible theories only:

1) They were kidnapped by a serial killer who was disguised as security or in the security business.

2) Someone working in collusion with other people "arranged" for Rachel to disappear because she had became an obstacle somehow (and the "security" guy could enter here). The other children were simply caught in the middle of something they ignored unfortunately. There is a piece of evidence that was a bit overlooked in the investigation (in my opinion). It points to someone still alive.

Just theories

Cannot elaborate more, due to the rules.

Both seem feasible, yes.

Not my state, but a friend from Illinois often used to talk about the Dardeen murders.

It was the lack of (obvious) motive and the fact Elaine was beaten so violently it caused her to go into labour that stuck with my friend. Just unimaginable.

(I'm across the pond in the UK. Where I am from, in my county, it's Stuart Lubbock who died in Michael Barrymore's pool FWIW)

Not sure if anyone from NM posted yet, but I would say one of the main ones is the West Mesa murders. Between 2001 and 2005, the remains of 11 women were found buried in an arroyo bank on Albuquerque's West Mesa. I live on the West Mesa, so this one haunts me and I would love to see it solved. West Mesa murders - Wikipedia
What about the Las Cruces bowling alley murders? I remember seeing this profiled on U.M. and AMW at the time. It angers me that it was never solved. Las Cruces bowling alley massacre - Wikipedia

I talked with one person from one of the girls' family (not Rachel's) last year. A nice, intelligent and patient person, he spent his precious time talking with me, a stranger, on such a painful matter, and we discussed a few theories (again thanks for that if you read this). He is still puzzled why the police didn't help them enough in those days. He said it might be because they are not rich or powerful enough.
