Remains of a man found off of Greene Mountain Rd, in the Cherokee National Forest, Wednesday, 17 February 2016.

The Greene County location is near the North Carolina state line, close to an area over a steep ravine, which locals refer to as "Insurance Hole" because of the many vehicles pushed over the side.

An autopsy will be conducted at the William L. Jenkins Forensic Center at East Tennessee State University.

"I'm not sure in what order they're going to do it. Our number one priority is to get the body identified," 3rd Judicial District Attorney General Dan Armstrong said today.

Armstrong confirmed Thursday that the body found by sheriff's deputies down an embankment off the remote gravel road was that of a man. Because of the state of decomposition, it may take time to make a positive identification, he said.

Greene County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Ray Allen said the body was found by a deputy at 2:30 p.m. down an embankment at the southern end of Greene Mountain Road, near the intersection of Viking Mountain Road and the North Carolina State line.

Allen said the deputy was not actively searching for a dead person in the area, but “just came across it.”

I'm a local. This area is very close to NC. Very heavily wooded all around the area, yet Viking Mountain Rd connects to a main, well-maintained, two lane (until closer to Asheville) curvy mountain road that goes from Greeneville to Asheville, NC. From the location where the body was found, it is about 40 minutes to the city of limits of Greeneville and about 45 minutes to Marshall, NC, with houses and farm land between both locations. The area where he was found is probably well known to most people between Greeneville and Marshall. The Appalachain Trail is located at the top of Viking Mountain Road. Because of the terrain and location, I do not believe he was a lost hiker. There has been no mention of a car being found in "insurance hole" regarding this case. According to LE, there are no active missing persons in Greene County.

He was missing from Kingsport and I doubt he got there by himself. I wish they would release more information. A person not from here wouldn't just turn up dead in that location.

Here's another story about West...

A news release from the Kingsport Police Department says 39-year-old Christopher A. "Smurf" West was reported missing by his sister on Jan. 27.
West had reportedly been out of contact with friends and family since Dec. 1, 2015, which was "very out of character for him," the KPD release said.
A KPD news release from January said King did not have a permanent home address. The release said that based on information available to police at the time, there was "significant cause to be concerned for his safety and general welfare."
Anyone with information regarding West's disappearance or death can contact the KPD Criminal Investigations Division by calling 423-229-9429 or Kingsport Central Dispatch at 423-246-9111.
