Found Deceased TN - Riley Strain, 22, missing after leaving bar, Nashville, 8 March 2024 #3

Yeah, apparently GHB has a bitter taste, which wouldn’t be like what he described. I doubt any roofie tastes like barbecue. It has to be explained by the type of alcohol they used.
GHB also has a salty taste. Keep in mind, Covid has had an impact on of our tastebuds (for some of us at least).

Regardless, RS noticed something wasn’t right with his drink.

Hi Everyone,

I am Steve Fischer, the private investigator for Riley's family. I am dedicated to collecting all available evidence in this case. The family is grieving deeply and misses Riley immensely. While I do not have any proof of foul play to date, I've promised to exhaust every lead to ensure a comprehensive presentation to the family, allowing them to draw their own conclusions.

We're awaiting toxicology results from both autopsies. I've been collaborating closely with the Colonel of the Davidson County Sheriff's Office, particularly regarding surveillance from the Birch Building. Later today,I have a call to discuss possible surveillance footage with Marathon Oil's General Counsel, given the proximity of their facility to where Riley's phone last pinged.

Our investigation will also encompass obtaining more witness statements and may include tests involving life-size dummies to analyze fall patterns and clothing's interaction with water currents over time.

The investigation will the meticulous and driven by evidence. My aim is to provide Riley's family with peace of mind and clarity. Thank you for keeping Riley and his family in your thoughts.

I watch a food channel on YouTube, and every week they make an old cocktail recipe.

If the recipe calls for rum, for example, they always make two or three different versions of the cocktail using different types of rum. And each version usually tastes completely different. They might love one version and absolutely hate another, purely because of the flavour of the particular rum.

Based on having watched a lot of those YouTube videos, I would think it's quite possible for a particular brand of rum to impart an unexpected flavour on a drink. You'd have to know which rum the bartender used before you could be sure there was anything strange about it.
True. Or maybe he got the wrong drink. I don't know if barbeque-flavored rum exists but barbecue-flavored whiskey and vodka definitely exist. And texting to his mom that rum and coke that tastes like barbeque "sounds good but it's not" could mean he had decided to try a "barbeque" drink but didn't like it.
MOO

There is a KC 360 Vodka that is BBQ flavored, but that would not be the house vodka, and I can't believe he would order that? There is no BBQ flavored Rum, thank god, so that's out. He could have ordered a spiced rum and maybe he had never had that before, and it could taste "funny" to him? I don't know if males are roofied that often, so I am skeptical of that. Maybe if it were a LGBT bar and a predator was there. I can support the idea he unfortunately met up with someone that may have assaulted him though. Nashville is not very safe at night.

Very possible.

One of the things that happens quite regularly on the food channel I mentioned, is that they'll say the cocktails have a "smoky" flavour they weren't expecting. I'll try to find one of the videos where they say the drink tastes smoky. I don't think it was rum, but it was definitely a drink they didn't expect to taste like that.

“After reports surfaced that an alleged witness had come forwardas the last person to speak to the 22-year-old on the night he went missing, the Nashville Police Department is clarifying the series of events.

As a spokesperson for the department told E! News on April 12, while an unnamed person did claim to speak to and see Riley the night of March 8, their statement was recanted following detective interrogation during which they said they had not actually seen him, but someone else.”

Odd that EOnline is the only source reporting this, so far.

There are rums available that have been smoked to mimic a BBQ flavour. One's called Cut to the Smoke. Another is called Burning Barn Rum. There's also a scotch called ArdbergBizareeBQ. Here's a list of drinks that add elements to infuse the smokiness of bbq in a drink.

Yeah, I don't know how to guess what RS would have ordered to drink. Personally I like beer and an occasional glass of white wine but very few liquors/mixed drinks appeal to me including plain old rum and coke! But saying X "sounds good but it's not" is the kind of thing a person might say after trying X for the first time.

Replying to myself because I found a couple of videos that might be somewhat relevant. This first video is a rum cocktail. All ingredients are the same apart from the type of rum, and both cocktails taste completely different:

This second video is the more relevant one. It's a scotch and dubonnet cocktail, but the hosts are very clear that none of the ingredients tasted smoky before they were mixed together. Something brought out the smokiness in a way they didn't expect. Both cocktails use the same ingredients apart from the scotch:

We now know which bars Riley Strain went to in Nashville.
1. Miranda Lambert's bar
2. Garth Brook's bar
3. Kid Rock's bar
4. Luke Bryan's bar
They are not sure which bar he was at when he texted his mom about the drink not tasting good, but they know it was not Luke Bryans.

Riley's family says they are now know all the bars and order because they got access to Riley's bank records.

That's one slow acting roofie!

I literally no nothing at all about this case in terms of personal knowledge. I do know a kid that is in the frat thought (younger than Riley so they may not even really know each other that well) but I do know his mom posted the story on her Facebook and asked for prayers. So it doesn't really tell us anything other than at least one of the young men did care enough to alert his mom about it. I have to admit that I am absolutely shocked to learn they still went to the formal that evening. I realize that everything is paid for in advance and they really had no idea where he was, but I would imagine not hearing from him for almost 24 hours should have you worried enough that you would cancel everything and go help search for him. I wonder if they were told by their leadership that they had to go to the formal? And what was the formal like? I don't know. Were they partying like nothing happened, or were they gathered to discuss the case?

Also, this said, young guys out at a bar and one "disappears" is not typically a cause for alarm, even if the guy is hammered. You think, maybe he met a girl, maybe he fell asleep on a bench somewhere, maybe he got arrested, maybe he crashed in another room, a million different options. I don't find it alarming that they didn't call authorities. I am sure they got home late (3:00 or something like that?) and passed out cold. They probably slept late and it took a while to realize that he was gone. And quite honestly, I can see the guys just thinking, hey, he's a grown man, he's 6'7", he can take care of himself.

Like I said, I literally know nothing personally about what happened to Riley other than that one loose connection I have, but I get a bit sensitive when I hear all of the trash talking going on in comments (other not here) about frats. Yes, I realize that some frats have had some issues, but my son is in a frat and while they definitely like to party, they are good-hearted kids, usually great students and do a lot of philanthropy as well. So while I don't want to throw them all under the bus, as they aren't meant to be a grown man's babysitter, I would still like to understand why they all chose to go to the formal after all of this.

Riley Strain’s family: ‘Somebody helped him in the water’

Poor family. IMO they are clearly grasping at straws trying to make sense of his death. Can't say I'd do anything different as a parent. But, all the evidence still points to death by misadventure.
