True Crime Movies

Brilliant thread you have going here Standreid! I confess that I've only seen the 2007 Zodiac movie and perhaps a few other true crime movies in my forensics class (the titles of which I cannot recall at the moment). After I finish through my current Basil Rathbone Holmes movies marathon, I will get started on your list right away!

You would have a hard time finding a better list then Standreids.
As much as I enjoyed the Robert Downey Jr. movies(especially the second one) Basil Rathbone IS Sherlock Holmes as far as Im concerend.
I've loved those movies since they used to run them on Sunday afternoons when I was a kid.
Or let me put it like this: when Im re-reading the original Conan Doyle stories its Rathbone who I picture as Holmes without fail.

Yes, that will be a good one to look for. I don't see a home disc release date on IMDb yet.

DVDs Release Dates currently says "Not announced".

Perhaps they should change their name to "Home Video Release Dates" unless that name is already taken.

I needed a break from CNN coverage of the missing Malaysia plane on Tuesday and noticed a movie that was going to be on TCM at 2:00PM. The 1950 film was called Madeleine, and I didn't recall ever having seen it previously. The brief synopsis of the movie indicated that it was the story of a beautiful young woman who was accused of poisoning her lover. I didn't realize until the end of the film that it was based on a notorious murder in Glasgow, Scotland. Since then, I've read several narratives about Madeleine Smith who stood trial for the murder of her lover but was acquitted for lack of proof. The film is dark, sensuous, a fascinating and riveting portrayal of a woman who will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

ETA: I notice that this film is mentioned in post #49 early in this thread.

I saw that a long time ago on a fringe ota analog station so some of it was fading in and out. Did the movie actually show her to be acquitted? In reality, the verdict was "not proven" which usually means that the jury thinks you did it but that the prosecution came up short in proving your guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The result is that the charged is freed the same as with an acquittal but is left with a cloud over them for the rest of their lives and I think that was the case with Ms. Smith as well.

Hopefully they will keep it real and not try to "solve" the case.

Hahaha. It's Hollywood! Any case be solved. I thought that movie was already out.

What could a fictional movie add (I wonder?) when there are three amazing documentaries on the case, the trial, and the aftermath?

I agree completely.................

I'll be looking for Frozen Ground.

I'll be looking for Frozen Ground.

STANDRIED, TFG Movie can now be rented via Amazon, Netflix, etc. Although this is the movie's director/producer first movie, imo it is a decent depiction of Robert Hansen's trail of terror. TFG movie is dedicated to his many victims. I've been researching R. Hansen for over 6 years, as this was one of the original cases profiled by the FBI BSU/BAU2. Hansen was profiled down to his lisp. He owned/operated a bakery/pastry shop where LE frequented. Do the math..
I've communicate with his only known surviving victim. Although she was fortunate enough to get away, she will always be a victim of his wrath due to survivor's remorse, etc., imo..
Let me know what you think after you watch TFG.. TYIA..

Been a long time lurker but first time poster.

Good Lifetime Movies That I have watched recently based on real crimes.

Lethal Vows (1999)
IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0212304/
Story based on Richard K. Overton, who was poisoning his ex-wife, Dorothy Boyer, and killed his third wife, Janet Overton.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLH-GpECXcg&
my opinion: REALLLY goood movie! Very suspenseful with solid actors. John Ritter, Marg Helgenberger playing the leads.

Girl Fight (2011)

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1956502/
based on the YouTube beating video of Victoria Lindsay also known as 'Tori' Lindsay. All the names and locations were changed. The real story happened in Florida.
Victoria Lindsay's story made headlines in 2008 when a video surfaced on YouTube, which showed 6 girls beating Lindsay while two male teens waited outside the home.

my opinion: Enjoyed the movie. Made me even more curious about the real story and after some research. I read the Victim might not be as innocent as the movie portrayed.

A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story (2006)
IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0787484/
based on the Story of Gwen Araujo, a young transgendered woman who was brutally murdered by four men in 2002.
link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jk_lxpW654&
my opinion: The story focused more on Gwens life than of her murder. I guess the family wanted it to be that way?

All American Girl, Mary Kay Letourneau Story (2000)
IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0232062/
Mary Kay Fualaau is a former schoolteacher who pleaded guilty to two counts of felony second degree rape of a child. The victim was her 12-year-old student, Vili Fualaau
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JusYbCPIa0o&
my opinion: average movie but interesting.

Thanks Krunch, I'm certain I haven't seen the last 3 - not sure about the first.

Fargo airing now; most realistic story of the true crime...and of course BillyBob has never been better on screen IMO!! :)

Has anyone here seen An American Crime (2007) with Ellen Page and Catherine Keener? I don't think I've ever cried so much during a movie in my life. I have to admit that it was very difficult to sit through… just because it was so frustrating. I definitely recommend it, but it's one of those movies that will have you asking "why?" about a million times until it ends… and then you're left with this sort of hollow feeling, an emptiness… not only because of the injustice of it, but because it's hard to fathom a world where people place so little value on a human life. Kind of makes you re-think everything really.
