I just get caught up in how mind-bogglingly dehumanizing it is to refer to people the same way we refer to a forbidden treat like cocaine.

I know there is a sad world refugees fleeing persecution and whose situation criminals take advantage of. In the book The Girl with Seven Names the author describes fleeing horrible conditions in North Korea, travelling illegally in China, and facing torture, jail, or death if the Chinese authorities found her and repatriated her to North Korea. She narrowly escapes several criminals trying to take advantage of her misfortune. She was a person seeking freedom and security, not something like cocaine.

Applying the phrase to someone going about daily business in their own neighborhood is just absurd. It sounds like it should be something from ancient times or rural places still run by religious nuts, where women aren't supposed to do anything in life without being escorted by a male family member. When people talk like that, I don't know if it's something they mean it at face value or if it's just a euphemistic way of saying maybe the person got involved with the drug trade or prostitution. It's a euphemism that to me sounds more offensive than saying aloud that they had mental/spiritual trouble and they lost control of their drug use and decided to get involved with prostitution and drug dealers.

From the Disappeared episode and what I read here, it doesn't sound like that happened to Ali Lowitzer. She may have been troubled and taking risks, but I don't think she was into drug dealing or prostitution. It sounds like a criminal murdered her, possibly because was taking risks like going off alone with people she didn't know well or possibly just from the misfortune crossing paths with a rare evil person.

As much as I rant, I think if it happened to my daughter, I would want a weird explanation over the likely explanation that it was a freak crime. We want horrific events to have complicated and horrific causes. Humans, including me, just hate the notion that random accident or random mutation of our DNA could take everything away.

So many people subscribe to the 'she was meeting up with an older man' theory after she got off the bus. But if that's the case, why did she text a friend at 2:50 pm and ask them to come hang out at her house? What IF that kid had said yes? Would she have asked them to come over if she had plans already?

And in 2010 it was more difficult to get copies of text messages from phone records- in fact, they never received this from the phone company in Ali's case. But they did learn this info from talking to friends. So I don't think Ali sent the text to be intentionally misleading. Phone technology wasn't that sophisticated yet.

This continues to lead me down the path of 'random abduction' ... or even perhaps there was someone she was talking to that was waiting for Ali to get off the bus that day, but Ali had no idea?

I don't know. What I do know is that it is extremely sad we don't have any answers yet.

Thanks for bumping. I live far away and never met her and it breaks my heart that she is still missing. i can only imagine how sad and strange it would be to have been in school with her and still wondering.

out of curiosity, do you know anything about the rumors shared in the two posts above yours? is there a prime theory that locals have about what happened to her?

I was hoping the silence meant there was something going on behind the scenes, but in Joann's latest Facebook video she sounded defeated and admitted the investigation was going nowhere. Very disheartening to hear. Like I said, my own investigation ran out of steam. I had a few of Ali's friends independently corroborate that there was an older guy on the scene. Although one of them said that Ali was also dating a fellow student at the same time. Their stories really opened my eyes about this case.

I still believe that Ali was meeting someone that afternoon, using the shift at the Burger Barn as a cover. I don't buy that she was planning to runaway, although one friend did mention something about Ali going to Mexico with a guy. A meeting was set up between Ali and the older guy she was seeing. Perhaps their relationship had become too risky, as Ali was legally a minor, and the guy agreed to meet her in order to abduct her. There is part of me that wonders if Ali was hiding a pregnancy. That might have been the final straw in the relationship. An older guy, perhaps a professional with a family of his own, sleeping with a teenager who now carries his baby? I could see that as his motive for foul play. Looking at Ali's final images, she did look kind of puffy and was wearing baggy clothing, but her weight did seem to fluctuate so it's hard to tell.

That’s very interesting! When I first heard about the older man, my mind immediately went to human trafficking but it’s been so long and there have not been any sightings that I am worried now that foul play may be involved :(
I wonder if this older man was someone she met online. If so, I hope that LE is/was able to figure out his identity. I really feel that after all of this time, she is not just staying away voluntarily unfortunately. Thank you for all of your hard work and time spent to find her.

Personally, I've never entertained the human trafficking theory, and I believe Amber Cammack did more harm than good leading the investigation down this route for her five minutes of fame.
 
Joanne, we love you. You are the most amazing woman, mother and friend. You did not deserve this. But you have drawn from the deepest part of your soul the most relentless strength that any daughter would be proud to see in their mom. You have sacrificed and fought EVERY day for 12 years to find sweet Ali. You have cherished the love and support from strangers around the world, and endured with self-restraint the criticisms, false judgments and unhelpful statements by those who have NEVER stood in your shoes. I just included this case in my Top 5 most intriguing missing persons cases for the 50th episide of Missing Persons podcast. I just have to believe that a girl who texted 4000 times a month (IIRC that’s what Joanne said) would have some evidence in her phone records of being in contact with this older guy. That is, assuming they analyzed those and tracked down every one of the numbers. It’s all so puzzling. Where is Ali??

There was a Facebook video with Joann and Amber (PI) over a year ago, where Amber said that they traced one of Ali's calls to a member of law enforcement. They said it was presumably the officer's son that Ali was contacting. I remember rewatching that part a couple of times to be sure I heard her right. I don't recall this ever being mentioned again, bearing in mind I haven't seen every video update.

It's hard to explain, but I feel glad when another one is discovered. Knowing that another family could have closure is good.

JoAnne - my mom is Teresa Morgan (a friend of Barbara who she worked with) and brought this to my attention. I was asking questions and coming to start a thread for Ali. I'm glad to see it's already here
! I would love to help however I can! Let's see if we can't get this re-sparked!? I happen to have some news/media friends and connections and I'm in the Houston area as well! Is it possible to pm me so we can see if we can't bring it back to the forefront as perhaps someone who knew something has made it to adulthood and is less concerned with getting in trouble for what they know!?

Alexandria “Ali” Lowitzer vanished on April 26, 2010 after riding the bus home from school while walking a short distance to her job on Cypresswood Drive in Spring.

Ever since, her mother Jo Ann Lowitzer, has paid $60 a month to keep Ali’s cell phone number active.

“It was that one little piece of her that I still had,” Jo Ann Lowitzer said while fighting back tears. “If she were able to reach a phone, she would have already called by now.”
